Backpack with segmented construction body protecting features

Backpacks, even those for outdoors sports, generally comprise an envelope of relatively flaccid textile material attached to a structured back-engaging frame, board or pad. Extreme sports such as skiing, motorbike racing, snow boarding, heli-skiing and such would benefit from greater protection to the person's back, as well as to the contents of the backpack. The disclosed backpack 2 includes a segmented and shaped back board 40 which permits limited flexing in certain directions to help protect the user's back from overextension. The container or packing portion 24 of the backpack 2 has corresponding rigid segments 16 interconnected by flexible textile portions 20. The segmented packing portion 24 and the segmented safety board 40 work together to protect both the contents of the backpack 2 and the back of the user.

Impact attenuating chin protector

An impact attenuating chin protector comprises a hard outer shell with a narrowed central area to better dissipate impact forces and an inner foam member. The foam member includes a series of alternating foam columns and recesses with perforations at controlled locations to provide additional force dissipation, improved ventilation, and protection from the edges of the hard outer shell. The interior surface of the foam member is configured so that almost the entire interior surface contacts the wearer's chin except for the perforations. The columns and recesses are configured so that recesses are located around two pressure points on the chin. Since the columns absorb the impact of a collision, the two pressure points on the wearer's chin are not directly impacted. The outer shell does not completely cover the foam member leaving the upper and lower edges of the foam member to extend beyond the edges of the shell.

Two-way protective pad construction

InactiveUS20130312152A1Dissipate impact forceCushion blowChemical protectionHeat protectionDistal portionEngineering
A protective pad including a rigid shell bounded by a perimeter and a gasket engaging the perimeter so that forces applied to the shell are dissipated through the gasket before transferring to a wearer of the protective pad. The rigid shell cooperates with the gasket to provide a trampoline effect or two way spring. This effectively absorbs shock from forces generated by the opponent, so that the wearer and a colliding opponent both encounter reduced forces. The shell can bow outwardly to form a cavity above the wearer when the gasket is placed adjacent the wearer, which can prevent the rigid shell from bottoming out against the wearer upon impact. The protective pad can be implemented in a thumb protector including a stopper disposed between adjacent rigid shells covering proximal and distal portions of a digit. The stopper can engage the shells and effectively prevent hyperextension of the digit.

Protective Athletic Garment and Method

A protective athletic garment provides segmented padding is patterned to conform to the size, shape and motion of the muscles it is protecting. Segmented padding is supplemented in joint areas by tangentially-stepped articulated shielding, each comprising a hingeably interconnected series of rigid shells. The structure and orientation of the shells deflects impact forces tangentially, while the rotational mobility of the shielding has a force-damping effect. The protective athletic garment has a combination of latticed resilient padding covering vulnerable body areas, such as chest, arms and back, plus articulated, perforated rigid shield panels over joints areas, such as shoulders and elbows. Synergistic dynamic interaction of padding and shielding is achieved by converting impact forces to torques within a series of articulated shield panels and spreading out the forces transmitted to the underlying padding both over area and time.
