Osteosynthesis plate, method of customizing same, and method for installing same

An implant for osteosynthesis used in the stabilization of fractured bone of the mandible. The plate consists of apertures through which the plate is secured to bone using surgical screws. The apertures are connected by (a) two lateral bar sections running approximately parallel to the long axis of the mandible and (b) two cross bar sections intersecting each other near the centroid of the plate and at acute angles to the lateral bar sections. The plate design can be modified to accommodate patient anatomy depending on the type of bone it is designed to stabilize. Design and size parameters of the fixation plate can be customized to each individual patient using a customization software application to determine the least invasive fixation plate that will provide adequate functioning in stabilizing the bone fracture to a degree that will allow safe bone healing. The invention includes a method of design of osteosynthesis plates using shape optimization for different types and locations of fractures.

Spinal disc implant with complimentary members between vertebral engaging plates

ActiveUS7909877B2Easy to installMinimal risk of dural damage and neural damageDiagnosticsJoint implantsBiomedical engineeringCircular segment
Embodiments disclosed herein provide a disc implant for maintaining intervertebral spacing and stability within the human spine. In some embodiments, the disc implant includes complementary members between vertebral engaging plates. A first engaging plate may have a convex portion that allows anteroposterior translation of a first member relative to the first engaging plate. Movement of the first member relative to the first engaging plate allows lateral movement of vertebrae adjacent to the engaging plates. The first member may be coupled to a second member via complementary shapes such as a projection and a recess. The second member may have a convex portion that complements a recess of a second engaging plate. The recess may be concave with an arcuate cross-sectional shape in an anteroposterior plane. Movement of the second engaging plate relative to the second member allows for anteroposterior movement of vertebrae adjacent to the engaging plates.

Measurement of large strains in ropes using plastic optical fibers

A method for the direct measurement of large strains in ropes in situ using a plastic optical fiber, for example, perfluorocarbon or polymethyl methacrylate and Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer or other light time-of-flight measurement instrumentation. Protective sheaths and guides are incorporated to protect the plastic optical fiber. In one embodiment, a small rope is braided around the plastic optical fiber to impose lateral compressive forces to restrain the plastic optical fiber from slipping and thus experience the same strain as the rope. Methods are described for making reflective interfaces along the length of the plastic optical fiber and to provide the capability to measure strain within discrete segments of the rope. Interpretation of the data allows one to calculate the accumulated strain at any point in time and to determine if the rope has experienced local damage.

Anti-Shower Curtain Effect Controller and Container

Shower curtains and shower curtain liners routinely get sucked into the occupant of a showering space due to the “shower-curtain effect,” which is the phenomenon in which a shower curtain or shower curtain liner gets drawn inward with a running shower. The present invention counteracts the shower curtain effect. In certain an embodiments of the invention, an outside unit and inside unit incorporate attachment mechanisms to draw both units into each other while trapping the shower curtain between both units. Attached to the outside unit of certain embodiments of the invention is a connector that also attaches a bottom unit. The bottom unit of certain embodiments of the present invention incorporates weight sufficient to utilize gravity to pull the attached shower curtain downward. The bottom unit places pressure on the external side of a bathtub to additionally force the entire apparatus and shower curtain outward.

Door opening assist device

The present invention provides a door opening assist device comprising a compression spring and piston retainably housed in a bind ended longitudinal bore formed in an externally threaded cylindrical housing. The spring and piston are held in cooperative engagement between a retaining nut and the blind end. The piston has a single protuberance extending normally from it's surface that resides in and travels about a spiral groove formed in the housing. The spiral groove has a series of detents, one of which can be selected to trap the protuberance and stop the spinning piston as it travels along the housing bore. The door opening assist device is installed in a door frame of an automobile to push the door open a distance determined by the detent selected. Upon closing the door, the door abuts and retracts the piston into the housing compressing the spring. Upon unlatching the door, the piston extends under spring bias in such a direction and with sufficient force to push the door to an open position a predetermined distance. The door opening assist device provides various mounting options through the use of a jam nut and a mounting plate.
