The apparatus for embedding a wavelet based audio watermark includes: a framing unit for dividing an input audio signal into small signals with a regular length; a discrete wavelet transform unit for calculating an mean value of wavelet coefficients by transforming the small signals based on a discrete wavelet transform; and an embedding unit for changing the calculated mean value according to a watermark where a synchronization signal is inserted and inserting the watermark into the audio signal.

Methods and systems for robust watermark insertion and extraction for digital set-top boxes are disclosed and may include descrambling, detecting watermarking messages in a received video signal utilizing a watermark message parser, and immediately watermarking the descrambled video signal utilizing an embedded CPU. A system to generate an enhanced acoustic transmission signal includes a carrier signal generator to generate a carrier signal. A data signal generator is provided to receive data and to generate a data signal representing the data. A signal modulator is also provided to modulate the carrier signal with the data signal to form a modulated carrier signal at a carrier frequency. The system includes a masking signal generator to generate a masking signal to mask the modulated carrier signal from being audible by a human ear. A high-quality signal, for example a unity-bit coded (DSD) audio signal having a 2.822 MHz bit rate (fs1) is converted to a lower sample rate (fs3) PCM signal by means of a sample rate converter (102). The watermark is embedded at the lower sample rate by a conventional watermark embedder (101) which is capable of handling signals at this lower rate. The watermark (WM) is not otherwise available. It is subsequently retrieved by subtracting (103) the unwatermarked signal from the watermarked signal, and up-sampled (104) to an intermediate sampling rate (fs2). The DSD signal is converted (110) to a PCM signal at said intermediate sample rate. The retrieved watermark is then added (107) to the PCM signal and the watermarked PCM signal is back-converted (120) to a unity-bit coded DSD signal. In a preferred embodiment, the arrangement includes a compensation circuit (105) which compensates the information signal X' for any (e.g. non-linear) operations performed by the embedder (101) so as to minimize the estimated watermark (WM'). The compensation circuit re-introduces said operations in the DSD domain by controlling parameters such as scaling (106, 109) and time shifting (108).

A method for monitoring tone quality of an audio player is provided. The method includes embedding a digital watermark into an audio signal, and playing the audio signal with the digital watermark by the audio player. Then, the digital watermark extracted from the audio signal played by the audio player is compared with the original digital watermark, so as to detect relative parameters of the tone quality of the audio player.
