Methods and apparatus for compiling computer programs using partial function inlining

A method and system makes inlining decisions that are efficient for subprograms that have significantly varying execution times over a range of variables or execution paths. A subprogram of a computer program is identified and certain execution paths of the subprogram are selectively inlined. The subprogram may be identified based on execution characteristics of the subprogram. The selective inlining of the execution paths may be based on execution characteristics of the paths. The paths may be selectively inlined based on an inline indication associated with an execution path, where the inline indication may be an inline directive. The inline directive may be included as part of a program comment statement. A compiler makes determinations whether to inline a specific execution path of a subprogram by evaluating certain information supplied in conjunction with the path. By supplying information in association with the subprogram path, the compiler may more easily determine the various execution characteristics of the execution paths and may inline or not based on the execution characteristic indication associated with the subprogram execution path.

Video-coding device and video-decoding device

A video-coding device and a video-decoding device, which are capable of assuring the necessary quality of a video sequence even if a transmission error and / or a loss of information occurs in a transmission line and preventing the propagation of decoding error to subsequent images, and can effectively retransmit the necessary coded information when a transmission error and / or a loss of information occurs in a transmission line. A motion-compensated interframe-predicting portion predicts an input image by using a preceding decoded image stored in a frame memory portion and outputs motion vectors. A difference calculating portion determines a difference between the input image signal and the predicted image signal and outputs the difference as a prediction-error signal to a band-dividing portion which in turn divides the prediction-error signal into n hierarchical layers of frequency-band-components and outputs them to respective coding portions. A loop-back control portion decides whether each of the coded frequency-band-components of the coded prediction-error signal from respective coding portions is input to a synthesizing portion and outputs a decoded prediction-error signal. The predicted image signal and the decoded prediction-error signal are combined to generate a decoded image signal corresponding to the input image. The decoded image signal is used for prediction of a subsequent input image. A motion-compensated interframe-predicting portion predicts an input image by using a preceding decoded image stored in a frame memory portion and outputs motion vectors. A difference calculating portion determines a difference between the input image signal and the predicted image signal and outputs the difference as a prediction-error signal to a band-dividing portion which in turn divides the prediction-error signal into n hierarchical layers of frequency-band-components and outputs them to respective coding portions for quantizing and encoding the respective components. Buffer portions store the coded information and output the information to an external circuit. The buffers output respective frequency-band-components of the coded information according to retransmission request signals from a retransmission control portion.

Rapidly obtaining a subset of message data from a server for filtering

Described is a system and method in which client-side tracking mechanisms allow a computing device to efficiently decide which messages need to be downloaded from a server for subsequent filtering evaluation, and request only those messages. For example, the present invention may be used to limit a download of POP3 email messages to those received in the last n days. When a message is downloaded that does not meet user-specified filtering criteria such as a date window, the message data is discarded, but the state of that message as not meeting the criteria is preserved in an already-checked table. On a subsequent data request, the received list of unique message IDs is checked against the main message store and the checked table, and message data only downloaded if the unique ID is not found. Messages that are not listed are removed from the message store or the checked table.

Method and system for scalable bitstream extraction

A scalable video compression system (100) having an encoder (120), bit extractor (140), and decoder (160) for efficiently encoding and decoding a scalable embedded bitstream (130) at different video resolution, framerate, and video quality levels is provided. Bits can be extracted in order of refinement layer (136), followed by temporal level (132), followed by spatial layer (134), wherein each bit extracted provides an incremental improvement in video decoding quality. Bit extraction can be truncated at a position in the embedded bitstream corresponding to a maximum refinement layer, a maximum temporal level, and a maximum spatial layer. For a given refinement layer, bits are extracted from all spatial layers in a lower temporal level prior to extracting bits from spatial layers in a higher temporal level for prioritizing coding gain to increase video decoding quality, and prior to moving to a next refinement layer.

Image processing apparatus, method therefor, and program

An image processing apparatus which decides a comparison position for performing similarity comparison between a comparison source image and a comparison destination image. A comparison source image and comparison destination image are divided into a plurality of blocks. Feature amounts of the images are calculated for each divided block. The similarity distance between the images are calculated after shifting on the basis of the feature amounts of corresponding blocks in the images. A position correction amount for correcting the comparison positions of the images is calculated on the basis of the size of the block and a position shifting pattern. Every time the position correction amount is calculated, the designated block division count is incremented, and the process is recursively executed. When recursive processing is determined to be ended, a comparison position at this time is finalized as the final comparison positions of the images.
