Method and apparatus for the manipulation of particles by means of dielectrophoresis

An apparatus and method for establishing closed dielectrophoretic potential cages and precise displacement thereof comprising a first array of selectively addressable electrodes, lying on a substantially planar substrate and facing toward a second array comprising one electrode. The arrays define the upper and lower bounds of a micro-chamber where particles are placed in liquid suspension. By applying in-phase and counter-phase periodic signals to electrodes, one or more independent potential cages are established which cause particles to be attracted to or repelled from cages according to signal frequency and the dielectric characteristics of the particles and suspending medium. By properly applying voltage signal patterns into arrays, cages may trap one or more particles, thus permitting them to levitate steadily and / or move. In the preferred embodiment, where one array is integrated on a semiconductor substrate, displacement of particles can be monitored by embedded sensors.

Method for transmitting a multi-channel data stream on a multi-transport tunnel, corresponding computer-readable storage means and tunnel end-points

A method is disclosed for transmitting a multi-channel data stream comprising frames comprising a plurality of channels, the transmitting being done via a multi-transport tunnel from a first tunnel end-point to a second tunnel end-point, the multi-transport tunnel implementing at least one first carrier supporting a transport protocol with acknowledgement and at least one second carrier supporting a transport protocol without acknowledgement.More specifically, the invention proposes to introduce a delay in the sending of data (<<of high importance>>) via the first carrier as compared with the sending of data (<<of lesser importance>>) via the second carrier. Thus the invention guarantees the order of arrival of channels that are associated with a same piece of synchronization but are transmitted on distinct first and second carriers and come from the separation of a same multi-channel data frame.

Wind speed measurement apparatus and method

A buoyant platform apparatus, such as a buoy, is described that comprises a laser radar (lidar) wind speed measurement device. The lidar is arranged to make wind velocity measurements at one or more remote probe volumes of known position relative to said platform. The wind speed measurement apparatus may further comprise motion sensing means that, in use, monitor motion of the platform allowing wind speed at an absolute position in space to be measured. Wind velocity data may also be compensated for platform movement.

Patterned chemical sensor having inert occluding layer

A sensor 40 that detects a chemical such as an organic vapor. The sensor 40 includes a film that has a film body 58 that includes a detection layer 48 and that is responsive to the presence of a chemical by providing a color change. The film also includes an occluding layer 54 that has a first major surface 59 and that is bound to the film body 58 but is inert to the detection layer 48 to preclude the occluding layer 54 and the chemical from causing a color change in the film body 58 in an area 42 normal to the first major surface 59 of the occluding layer 54. A sensor having this construction can provide a distinctly visible image on the sensor, which may be helpful in evaluating the remaining life of a filter cartridge.

Non-elastomeric respirator mask that has deformable cheek portions

A respiratory mask (10) that comprises a mask body (12) and a harness (21) that includes a carriage (22) and a strap (24). The mask body (12) lacks a rigid insert, is non-elastomeric, and is adapted for fitting over a person's nose and mouth. The mask body (12) has a nose portion (14), a chin portion (16), first and second cheek portions (18 and 20), and an axis (32) that extends from the nose portion (14) to the chin portion (16). The mask body (12) is constructed to deform such that the first and second cheek portions (18 and 20) move towards each other about the axis (32). The carriage (22) is joined to the mask body (12), and the strap (24) is joined to the carriage (22) for supporting the mask body (12) over a person's nose and mouth. When tension is applied to the strap (24) and an opposing force acts at the nose and chin portions of the mask body, the first and second cheek portions (18, 20) exhibit movement about the axis (32) towards each other. The respirator mask is beneficial in that it is lightweight, easy to manufacture, and maintains a good fit to a person's face.

Direct Write and Additive Manufacturing Processes

ActiveUS20100171792A1Resistance of ink decreaseDecreased cure rateAdditive manufacturing apparatusAdditive manufacturing with liquidsEngineeringEddy current
A Direct Write method of forming components on a substrate by deposition of ink by thermally curing the ink in situ, which method overcomes the need for curing by placing the substrate in an oven. The curing is performed in an exemplary embodiment using an induction coil (6) through which an oscillating current is passed. The coil (6) is placed above the region in which Direct Write ink has been deposited. The oscillating current induces eddy currents in the ink to cause heating of the ink and thus fix the ink by curing, sintering etc.
