Humidistats are used in a number of devices including dehumidifiers, humidifiers, and microwave ovens. In humidifiers and dehumidifiers the humidistat is used where constant relative humidity conditions need to be maintained such as a refrigerator, greenhouse, or climate-controlled warehouse. When adjusting the controls in these applications the humidistat would be what is being set. In microwaves they are used in conjunction with "smart cooking" one-button features such as those for microwave popcorn. Humidistats employ hygrometers but are not the same. The speed control may include a time delay circuit and single pole, double throw relay. The speed control is used to slow the speed of the air cycler during the initial stage of a cooling cycle. This initial stage is typically the first 5–7 minutes of the air conditioning cycle. In a further aspect, a humidistat is operably associated with the system for detection of humidity levels within the air of a home or other structure. The system is programmed to close the motorized outside air damper in the event that humidity levels exceed a predetermined level, thereby limiting further entry of humid outside air into the home.

To dehumidify the air, the system's compressor, supply air fan, and outside air damper are controlled in a manner similar to other systems operating in a cooling mode when the room temperature is above a certain setpoint temperature. When the room temperature falls below the setpoint, however, the operation changes significantly. The controller closes the outside air damper, decreases the speed of the fan, and continues operating in this manner until the room temperature decreases to a subcooling temperature limit. The subcooling temperature limit is less than a predetermined limit that is used during the system's normal cooling mode.
