Technique for peak power to average power ratio reduction in multicarrier communication systems

A gradient sensitivity based method is described for reducing Peak to Average Power Ratio in multicarrier communication systems. The method involves definition of a differentiable penalty function which has non-zero values whenever there is a peak violation. The gradient of the function with respect to the symbol magnitudes and phases is evaluated at the given symbol vector. Symbol perturbations are computed in the opposite direction of the gradient in such a way that the peaks are reduced and the amount of errors introduced in the symbols is not large enough to affect the decoding process. In order to reduce computation, a variant of the method is proposed where a peak reduction kernel is precomputed and stored. The kernel is rotated to the location of the peak and added with proper sign to reduce PAR.

Cathodic protection assessment probe

ActiveUS20120205256A1Stable polarization chemistryProviding some amountElectricityPower flow
An apparatus and method for monitoring cathodic protection of a protected object that includes a probe with five segments in series. The cathodic protection is provided by a system with a power supply that impresses current onto the protected object. An anode is included with the system that is also connected to the power supply. The third and fifth segments are in electrical communication through a frangible connection; that over time galvanically corrodes to electrically isolate the third and fifth segments. The second segment, which is a permanent isolator, is set between the first and third segments. The third segment is selectively connected with the protected object. When the third segment is selectively disconnected from the protected object, measuring the potential difference between the third segment and the first segment yields a value for object polarization that is void of IR error.

Medical Device with Retractable Needle

A tamperproof retractable non-reusable syringe has a one piece hollow outer body with a barrel for a slidable plunger, a transition zone and a smaller diameter nose portion. An elongated needle holder and spring combination is installable from the rear of the outer body, guided into the nose portion and held by cooperating inwardly and outwardly facing surfaces oriented in the direction of retraction at the most constricted part of the transition zone where the nose begins. The plunger has an opening with a dislodgable stopper for receiving parts of the retraction mechanism. The stopper and the head of the needle holder are of significantly reduced diameter from the injection fluid chamber to resist blowing out prematurely. In one embodiment the head of the needle holder is surrounded by a separable retainer member which is slidingly removed by contact with the tip of the plunger after the stopper is mostly or fully removed to avoid cumulation of force required for retraction after the injection. In a second embodiment the head of the needle holder is clamped and held by constricting forces imposed by stress on the outer body induced by interference fit. Release occurs by slight expansion on the barrel by contact of the plunger tip with a small internal ramp in the outer barrel. Both embodiments have a plunger cap configured to enter an opening in the outer body to provide an additional tamperproof feature. The retraction cavity is provided with venting structures to assure that all uninjected fluid is retained within the syringe body.

Constant-rate volatile material dispensing device

A volatile material dispensing device is provided, including a reservoir containing a supply of any one of numerous volatile materials having an outlet port with attached tube through which the volatile material flows, a valve and valve adjustment mechanism to control the flow rate through the tube, a lower housing incorporating a pad to receive the volatile material, and a tear-off tab that initially seals the tube and prevents flow until removed by the consumer. Optionally, the device may include an active mechanism, such as a fan, to aid dispersal of the volatile material. The device gives the user control of the intensity of the vapor by providing the ability to adjust the flow through the valve with the valve adjustment mechanism. The device also provides constant vapor intensity over time with a time-release dispersing mechanism delivering a controlled, consistent flow, with an appropriate drip rate.

Spring-loaded retention and release mechanism for use on clipless bicycle pedals

A retention and release mechanism for use on clipless bicycle pedals employed to achieve a mechanical advantage in the retention and release of shoe clip adapters and toe clips and other adapters. A preferred embodiment of the mechanism fits within existing clipless pedals, thus replacing existing rear retainers, and comprises a means by which it is affixed to the clipless pedal, a cleat retaining formation, a spring actuator and a specialized rearward extending spar. The cleat retaining formation has a special surface which facilitates entering a clip adapter or toe clip into retention mode. Release mode is effectuated by pressure on the spar which then engages the spring actuator to open the cleat retaining formation. The mechanism may be used on any type of clipless pedal and with any type of cleat adapter.

Device for dispensing a dental material and method of dispensing

ActiveUS20140299624A1Low expandabilityMinimizing total elasticityOpening closed containersBottle/container closureBiological activationBiomedical engineering
A device for dispensing a dental material comprises first compartment and the second compartment formed between interconnected sheet-like layers. The compartments encapsulate a first flowable component and a second flowable component of the dental material. The device has a first seal and a second seal for sealing the first compartment and the second compartment in the device. Each seal is adapted to automatically open in consequence of forcing a component of the dental material toward the seal. The capacity of the first compartment and the second compartment relative to each other is dimensioned such that squeezing out the first component from the first compartment by compressing the first compartment causes the first seal and the second seal to open. The device preferably allows easy and quick activation for use of the stored components.

System and method for controlling fuel supplied to an engine

Systems and methods for determining fuel delay in a fuel injected engine with cylinders that may be deactivated are presented. In one example, the fuel injection delay is determined via a cylinder firing schedule array when the cylinder firing schedule array is available. The fuel injection delay is determined via weighted average of a fuel injection delay of a present engine cycle and a fuel injection delay of a past engine cycle when the cylinder firing schedule array is not available.
