Method and system for processing and transmitting electronic auction information

A system and method for conducting a multi-person, interactive auction, in a variety of formats, without using a human auctioneer to conduct the auction. The system is preferably implemented in software. The system allows a group of bidders to interactively place bids over a computer or communications network. Those bids are recorded by the system and the bidders are updated with the current auction status information. When appropriate, the system closes the auction from further bidding and notifies the winning bidders and losers as to the auction outcome.

System and process for delivery of content over a network

Network systems and processes for delivery of electronic content to recipient processors may be configured to facilitate the delivery of relatively large content items and / or a relatively large number of content items. In one example, a movie rental system and process delivers (downloads) movie files to customers across the Internet. System network architecture includes three or more layers of servers, including a main server supporting an interface for recipient processors to request content items, a plurality of parent servers, and a plurality of edge servers. Edge servers are distributed throughout a region in which the system provides content delivery services to recipient processors. Parent servers, spaced across the service region, support edge servers. A copy of each content item available through the service is distributed from the main server to each parent servers for storage. Parent servers distribute content to edges servers, pursuant to instructions from the main server or requests from the edge servers. The main server receives and processes requests for content items from recipient processors and directs recipient processors to edge servers for obtaining requested content items. The main server also authenticates licenses and publishes rules for the distribution of content items.

Full service trade system

A system stores criteria specified by a funder relating to trade transactions for buyers and sellers. The system compares the criteria with a proposed purchase order to determine whether the system can generate a payment guarantee on behalf of the funder for the buyer to the seller. The system also compares subsequent documents relating to an original purchase order with the original purchase order to ensure that the terms of the purchase order are properly fulfilled. When the appropriate conditions for payment are met, the system issues a funds transfer instruction to transfer payment from the buyer to the seller.

Correcting for changed client machine hardware when using a server-based operating system

Methods and systems for adjusting an operating system configuration according to changes in hardware components of a client computer. The adjusted operating system can boot on the client computer regardless of changes in the hardware configuration of the client computer since it was last connected to a network server. Before the operating system boots, a preliminary connection is established between the client computer and the server. During the preliminary connection, the system identifies hardware components that are new and that must be supported by the operating system for bootup to occur. In particular, the server sends information relating to the previous client hardware configuration to the client computer. The client computer compares its current hardware configuration to the previous hardware configuration information, thereby identifying its new hardware components. Information identifying the new hardware components is sent to the server. The server locates operating system components or device drivers that support the new hardware components and stores them in a specified repository at the server. The operating system, which is now reconfigured to support the current client hardware components, is downloaded to the client computer and boots thereon.

Method and apparatus for providing mobile inter-mesh communication points in a multi-level wireless mesh network

A mobile backhaul inter-mesh communication point forms an interface between a wireless mesh network on a first level and a wireless mesh network on a second, higher bandwidth, level. The two wireless networks are differentiated, e.g., by causing the mesh networks to be formed using different spectra, protocols or coding, or antennae. The mobile intra-mesh communication point functions as an access point in the lower level mesh network and as a relay point in the upper level mesh network. Utilizing mobile inter-mesh communication points facilitates deployment of wireless network access points while enabling the location of access points to follow the concentration of network users. Mobile inter-mesh communication points may be deployed in personal vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles, public transportation vehicles such as busses, trains, and aircraft, emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances, and many other types of vehicles.

Establishing one computer as a replacement for another computer

Methods and systems for recognizing a client computer as a replacement for a previous client computer or as being new to a computer network. When a client computer is connected to a server in a computer network, the client computer sends its unique identifier to the server. The server compares the unique identifier against a list of known unique identifiers. If the server determines that the unique identifier is unknown, the client computer prompts the user to select one of a list of user options, which include, for example, a replacement computer option and a new computer option. If the user selects the replacement computer option, the user also identifies the previous computer that has been replaced. The server then replaces the previous computer's unique identifier with the replacement computer's unique identifier, and assigns the replacement computer to an appropriate server computer. If the user instead selects the new computer option, the server assigns the new computer to an appropriate server computer. The methods may further include identifying the hardware components of the new or replacement computer and modifying operating system components with little or no user assistance.

Isolation of soil with a low temperature barrier prior to conductive thermal treatment of the soil

Freeze wells may be used to isolate an area for soil remediation. Freeze wells may form a frozen barrier around a treatment area. The frozen barrier may inhibit fluid from entering into the treatment area. The frozen barrier may also inhibit migration of contamination out of the treatment area. The frozen barrier may be used to surround all of the perimeter of the treatment area. A frozen barrier may also be formed above or below a treatment area. Freeze wells may be activated in advance of soil remediation so that a frozen barrier is formed when soil remediation is begun. The soil remediation may be accomplished by any type of soil remediation system, including a thermal soil remediation system. Heaters of a thermal soil remediation system may be may be placed close to the frozen barrier without the barrier being broken through during remediation.

Expense management system and method

An expense management method for controlling a budget of each department in an organization is provided in an operational environment which includes a plurality of terminal units electrically connected to a host via an electronic communications network. Firstly, a user stores a total budget of a department in the host. Secondly, a user sends a purchase requisition of the department from a terminal unit of that department to the host via the network. Thirdly, the host calculates a budget balance of the department according to the total budget and a history of expenses of the department that is stored in the host. Finally, the host determines if a total cost of the purchase requisition exceeds the budget balance of the department. If the total cost is within the budget balance, the host sends purchase order to an appointed supplier. Otherwise, the host sends an alarm to the user.

Transparent material processing with an ultrashort pulse laser

Methods for ultrashort pulse laser processing of optically transparent materials. A method for scribing transparent materials uses ultrashort laser pulses to create multiple scribe features with a single pass of the laser beam across the material, with at least one of the scribe features being formed below the surface of the material. This enables clean breaking of transparent materials at a higher speed than conventional techniques. Slightly modifying the ultrashort pulse laser processing conditions produces sub-surface marks. When properly arranged, these marks are clearly visible with side-illumination and not clearly visible without side-illumination. In addition, a method for welding transparent materials uses ultrashort laser pulses to create a bond through localized heating. The ultrashort pulse duration causes nonlinear absorption of the laser radiation, and the high repetition rate of the laser causes pulse-to-pulse accumulation of heat within the materials. The laser is focused near the interface of the materials, generating a high energy fluence at the region to be welded. This minimizes damage to the rest of the material and enables fine weld lines.

Method of operation of a navigation system to reduce expenses on future trips and to provide other functions

A navigation system includes a driving profile program. The driving profile program collects information about an end user's driving activity. The information relates to trips made by the end user. The information includes departure times, intermediate stops, arrival times, purposes of the trips, and so on. After collecting this information over a period of time, the driving profile program analyzes the end user's driving activity. The driving profile program provides the end user with a driving activity profile. In addition, the driving profile program determines ways to reduce the amount of time and / or expense that the end user spends traveling in his / her vehicle and suggests modifications to the end user's driving activity that would save the end user time or expense.
