92 results about "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface" patented technology

In a computer, the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) provides an open standard that operating systems can use to discover and configure computer hardware components, to perform power management by (for example) putting unused components to sleep, and to perform status monitoring. First released in December 1996, ACPI aims to replace Advanced Power Management (APM), the MultiProcessor Specification, and the Plug and Play BIOS (PnP) Specification. ACPI brings the power management under the control of the operating system, as opposed to the previous BIOS-centric system that relied on platform-specific firmware to determine power management and configuration policies. The specification is central to the Operating System-directed configuration and Power Management (OSPM) system, an implementation for ACPI which removes device management responsibilities from legacy firmware interfaces via a UI.

Method and apparatus for providing updated system locality information during runtime

Embodiments of the invention provide a method and an apparatus to collect and dynamically update system locality information during runtime. In one method embodiment, the present invention collects system locality information at boot time to be provided to an operating system. The system locality information describes distances between devices within an integrated processing system. The operating system is then notified that a triggering event has occurred that may potentially alter the distances between devices within the integrated processing system. Upon receipt of this notification, the operating system invokes an Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) procedure that provides updated system locality information during runtime to reflect the changes in distances between devices within the integrated processor system after the occurrence of the triggering event.

System and method for using hot plug configuration for PCI error recovery

A method, system, and program product for recovering from a bus error in a computer system having a hot plug interface. In accordance with the method of the present invention, an operating system transparent interrupt, such as a system management interrupt, is generated in response to a bus error. Responsive to the operating system transparent interrupt, the hot pluggable bus is scanned and a device associated with the error is identified by an interrupt handler invoked by the interrupt. Finally, a hot plug configuration manager, such as an advanced configuration and power interface is utilized to remove the identified device from system operations without having to restart the system.

Power control of servers using advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) states

A method of managing power consumption by a plurality of blade servers within a processing system. The speed of at least one of the plurality of blade servers is reduced in response to the processing system reaching a power or thermal threshold. At least one of the plurality of blade servers is identified as not being critical to maintain in a working state and the critical blade server is put in a sleep state. A satellite management controller may control blade server power consumption and heat generation in various ways that combine processor speed-stepping and control of processor sleep states. Known sleep states save more power than speed-stepping by turning off the processor and / or volatile memory. The processor speed and sleep-states of at least one non-critical blade server, and optionally the processor speed of a critical processor, may be changed in order to control the power consumption below a power threshold or control the temperature below a thermal threshold.

Method of configuring a computer system capable of being woken up on LAN

A method of configuring a computer system capable of being woken up on a LAN A core power is actuated for an interval by performing a Pre-Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (Pre-ACPI) routine. Next, a PCI clock signal is retrieved in the fixed interval and then an Ethernet ID is loaded using the PCI clock signal, so as to set a south bridge to a standby mode capable of receiving a wake-up event. As a result, use of an oscillator in conventional methods can be reduced, and the computer system can be configured to be capable of being woken-up on LAN, without requiring the start-up procedure, so that the computer system may be awoken on the LAN even after an abnormal shutdown.

ACPI complaint computer system and overtemperature protection method therefor

A computer system having an operating system which complies with the advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) specification comprises a temperature sensor for sensing an inner temperature of the computer system and for generating an alarm signal when the sensed temperature exceeds a predetermined value, a bridge controller for generating a system management interrupt (SMI) in response to the alarm signal, a basic input-output system (BIOS) read-only memory (ROM) for storing a power management routine, and a power management processor for receiving a power control command signal generated by the power management routine in response to the SMI, and for generating a system command interrupt (SCI). The operating system causes the computer system to enter a “sleep” state in response to the SCI. The computer system enters the “sleep” state when the inner temperature exceeds the predetermined value, and restores data normally when the computer system resumes operation.

Trusted platform module support on reduced instruction set computing architectures

Exemplary features pertain to providing trusted platform module (TPM) support for ARM®-based systems or other Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) systems. In some examples, secure firmware (e.g., TrustZone firmware) operates as a shim between an unsecure high level operating system (HLOS) and a discrete TPM chip or other trusted execution environment component. The secure firmware reserves a portion of non-secure memory for use as a command response buffer (CRB) control block accessible by the HLOS. The secure firmware translates and relays TPM commands / responses between the HLOS and the TPM via the non-secure CRB memory. The system may also include various non-secure firmware components such as Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) components. Among other features, the exemplary system can expose the TPM to the HLOS via otherwise standard UEFI protocols and ACPI tables in a manner that is agnostic to the HLOS.

Dynamically configuring resources for cycle translation in a computer system

A method and system that enables customized computer machines to be more readily developed by removing the function of resource translation out of the hardware abstraction layer (HAL). A machine manufacturer describes a machine in firmware, such as accordance with the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification, using ACPI machine language (AML). Operating system components such as a Plug and Play (PnP) manager in the kernel, in conjunction with an ACPI driver, interpret the description information and locate resources (bus bridges) for which translation is needed. For any arbitrary bus architecture or CPU to PCI bridge implementation that can be expressed, e.g., in ACPI firmware, the invention provides a translator external to the HAL. In one implementation, a PnP driver communicates with the ACPI driver and various drivers in driver stacks via I / O request packets (IRPs) to look for resource translators. The ACPI driver analyzes the machine description and returns a translator if found for such a resource. The resource is then configured to output cycles based on the translator.

Data processing system and method

The present invention relates to a data processing system method and, more particularly, to a system and method for manipulating CMOS parameters that are stored within a CMOS memory, via a user interface other than the conventional BIOS set up program. Embodiments of the present invention use a Root System Description Table Pointer as prescribed by the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface specification to read an operating system accessible table contained within conventional memory. The table stores access data to allow access to at least a subset of the BIOS CMOS parameters. Advantageously, since the access data for the CMOS parameters are stored within conventional memory, a user interface that is more sophisticated than a conventional BIOS set up program user interface can be used for manipulating those values. Still further, tokens are used to present a system independent way of representing the CMOS parameters to higher level programs. These tokens may remains constant regardless of underlying changes to the CMOS parameters.

Main board power supply protection circuit

The invention relates to a power supply protection circuit for a main board used for protecting the main board of a power cord in an unconnected central processor unit. The power supply protection circuit for the main board comprises an input and output controller, an advanced configuration and a power interface controller. The power supply protection circuit for the main board also comprises a controlling signal generation circuit and an enabling signal generating circuit. The controlling signal generation circuit generates a controlling signal according to the power supply condition of the central processor unit and the signal is sent into the input and output controller. At the same time, the enabling signal generating circuit generates an enabling signal which causes the input and output controller to process the controlling signal normally. When the power cord of the central processor is wrongly connected, the controlling signal causes the input and output controller to send a shutdown signal to the advanced configuration and the power interface controller to stop power supply. The power supply protection circuit of the main board can carry out protection for the main board with an occurrence of abnormal power state on the central processor unit.
