A method and system for determining a geographical location and orientation of a vehicle (200, 300) travelling through a road network is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining, from one or more cameras (202, 302) associated with the vehicle (200, 300) travelling through the road network, a sequence of images (500) reflecting the environment of the road network on which the vehicle (200, 300) is travelling, wherein each of the images has an associated camera location at which the image was recorded. A local map representation representing an area of the road network on which the vehicle (200, 300) is travelling is then generated using at least some of the obtained images and the associated camera locations. The generated local map representation is compared with a section of a reference map, the reference map section covering the area of the road network on which the vehicle (200, 300) is travelling, and the geographical location and orientation of the vehicle (200, 300) within the road network is determined based on the comparison. Methods and systems for generating and / or updating an electronic map using data obtained by a vehicle (200, 300) travelling through a road network represented by the map are also disclosed.

A crank angle detecting device that is independent of fluctuations in engine rotational speed and reliably detects a reference crank angle position. A ring gear fixed to a crankshaft of a single cylinder engine has plural projections (teeth) formed around its outer periphery at equal intervals and one irregular interval portion (toothless portion). A crank angle sensor detects start and end on both sides of each projection, a lateral length of each projection and an interval of two adjacent projections, and calculates a ratio therebetween to distinguish the irregular interval portion from the projections. The crank angle sensor and the irregular interval portion are so positioned that the irregular interval portion is detected when the piston is close to bottom dead center.

Whereas prior art PIR sensor detection circuitry employs multiple amplification stages, to boost the power of the weak sensor signal, and a window comparator to determine whether an occupancy condition exists, the present invention uses, at most, a single amplification stage and no window comparator. In place of multiple amplification stages and a window comparators, the PIR sensor circuitry of the present invention uses a sensitive microcontroller to both detect and process the signal. A peak detector can be added just before the signal—whether amplified or not—is received by the microcontroller. Decay time of the peak detector is adjusted so that the signal will not substantially decay between measurements.
