93 results about "Berm" patented technology

A berm is a level space, shelf, or raised barrier (usually made of compacted soil) separating two areas. It can serve as a fortification line, a border/separation barrier, in industrial settings, or in many other applications. A berm is also used on mountain bike and BMX courses to assist the rider around a corner at speed; this type of berm is often steep and curved, unlike most "construction berms". The word berm originates in the Middle Dutch and came into usage in English via French.

Portable environmental containment system

A temporary berm or bin system, easily transported, erected without tools, and easily dismantled. A set of panels or planks is joined with sliding clips to form a bin having vertical or near vertical sides. The bin is lined with an impervious sheet of geocloth to form a containment berm for use in controlling the dispersal of hazardous material spilled from storage or work facilities. Spring loaded clamps hold the geocloth securely to the uppermost plank without nailing, sewing, or other labor consuming and / or tear prone methods. The berm is particularly suited to protect oil well drilling sites in environmentally sensitive environments such as arctic tundra. No excavation or other disturbance of the soil is required to erect the protective berm. The berm is secured to the ground by spildng through triangular support gussets. In the arctic, securing may be accomplished by freezing ice or mud as an "ice mortar" over the gusset feet and along the lower edge of the planking. The berm system may be transported by ordinary truck, specially adapted transport / laying truck, or on a portable drilling platform.

Optical disk mastering system

The invention discloses a method and an apparatus for creating an elementary optical disc master with but a single layer to be applied to a disc substrate to form pits having ideal shapes and without berm buildup. These ideally shaped pits are improvements in the technology of disc mastering, due to the manufacturing and data playback advantages that are inherent in the ideally shaped pits. An optically active lamina consisting of a dye polymer solution of nitrocellulose and a increased dye additive is spin coated directly to a pregrooved polycarbonate substrate to enable the recording of data on the disc by laser means in the form of pits. The pits are created by having a data modulated laser focusing on the optically active lamina which reacts to the irradiation causing a pit to be formed. The resulting pit more often than not possesses a residual raised berm area surrounding the pit, in what is considered to be a less than ideal shape for a pit. The residual berm, however, is eliminated by an additional process and step of passing the recently recorded disc under a UV illumination source before application of a final conductive layer to the disc.

Vegetation control method and apparatus

A method of killing or controlling vegetation particularly along roadside berms involves the application of pressurized hot water from a moving applicator head in close proximity to the ground. The pressurized hot water is applied as jets of hot water from an applicator head at a temperature in the range of 100 DEG C. to 110 DEG C. and the flow rate of about 10 liters / minute supplied from one or more pumps operating at a pump pressure of between 200 to 100 psi. The apparatus is mounted on or in a vehicle such as a van, containing a water tank (1), a boiler (2) arranged to heat pressurized water supplied by a pump (4) under pressure to the boiler (2). The pump (4) is a piston pump which supplies the pressurized water through the boiler to a hand held applicator (5) or optionally a towed boom applicator (6). The hand held applicator (5) has an applicator head inside a shroud so that the pressurized hot water is applied to the surface of vegetation as jets of water within the confines of the shroud.

Cascading system of floodway stormwater containment basins

A series of cascading basins is excavated along a sloped floodway typically established between adjoining agricultural fields. These basins address problems of stormwater runoff from agricultural lands and certain urban areas where runoff carries sediment, nitrogen, phosphorous and other pollutants into nearby streams, rivers and tidal waters, The cascading basin series begins with basin placement at a higher topographical elevation, followed by basin positioning downwardly along a natural or excavated floodway slope simulating a terraced effect. As upper basins are filled they spill over into basins therebelow. Angular features of basin exit grade and stormwater escape slopes retard egress of stormwater. A lowermost terminal basin includes sand berm, boulders, rip rap and other barriers to retain the polluted runoff. Basins may include vegetation, slag stone layers, and other pollutant treatment elements.
