The disclosure relates to a method (400) comprising: - obtaining, by a computing system (100), aliquoting data, wherein the aliquoting data comprise instructions specifying that a portion of a biological sample (31) included in a first sample container (1) is to be aliquoted into a second sample container (2); - obtaining, by the computing system (100), laboratory data, wherein the laboratory data comprises information indicative of one or more laboratory instruments (22) which are to process the second sample container (2) and / or one or more laboratory locations at which the second sample container (2) is to be processed; - determining, by the computing system (100), based on at least the laboratory data, indicium data, wherein the indicium data comprise information indicative of an indicium template according to which an indicium (52) is to be generated, wherein the indicium (52) is to label the second sample container (2) and comprises identification information for identifying the second sample container (2); and - causing, by the computing system (100), the indicium (52) to be generated according to the indicium template.

A laboratory automated system includes a conveyor assembly, a dock that that is movable between first and second positions, a drive assembly for moving the dock between the first and second positions, and a diverter for diverting a sample receptacle carrier from the conveyor assembly to the dock. The dock includes a first carrier support portion having a planar surface for supporting the sample receptacle carrier as the dock moves between the first and second positions. The dock includes an upwardly extending second carrier support portion situated adjacent the first carrier support portion. The second carrier support portion has a contoured side surface. The dock includes one or more magnets fixedly contained within or disposed on the second carrier support portion to magnetically couple with a magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier.

Capacitive liquid volume measurement

A laboratory automation apparatus with a liquid volume measurement functionality comprising a working table, a pipettor comprising a pipetting head with an electrode providing a capacitive sensor with a reference electrode. A robotic arm is configured to move the pipetting head above the working table. A processor is operatively coupled to the robotic arm, to the pipettor and to the electrode by an electronic circuit. A capillary is located on the working table having an opening for receiving a target amount of liquid from the pipettor to form an air-liquid meniscus in the capillary. The robotic arm is configured to hover the electrode over the capillary to detect a change in capacitance related to the position of the meniscus, and the processor is configured to calculate the transferred amount of liquid from the position of the meniscus in the capillary.
