Modified silk films containing glycerol

InactiveUS20110223153A1Distinct propertyAdds “ green chemistry ” valueAntibacterial agentsOrganic active ingredientsActive agentGlycerol
The present invention provides for compositions and methods for preparing aqueous insoluble, ductile, flexible silk fibroin films. The silk films comprise silk fibroin and about 10% to about 50% (w / w) glycerol, and are prepared by entirely aqueous processes. The ductile silk film may be further treated by extracting the glycerol from and re-drying the silk film. Active agents may be embedded in or deposited on the glycerol modified silk film for a variety of medical applications. The films may be into 3-dimentional structures, or placed on support surfaces as labels or coatings. The glycerol modified silk films of the present invention are useful in variety of applications such as tissue engineering, medical devices or implants, drug delivery, and edible pharmaceutical or food labels.

Shape-adjusting mechanism

A shape-adjusting mechanism for a backrest has a lumbar basket which includes a pair of supports spaced apart along a predetermined axis. Resilient axial ribs are fastened between the brackets, and resilient transverse ribs are fastened to the axial ribs. The axial ribs are structured to flex as the supports are drawn together, to achieve a profile that better conforms to the shape of a user's spine. To that end, each axial rib is stamped with reinforcing flanges that extend partially along its length and produce lengthwise rib sections of different bending resistance that determine the profile of the lumbar basket in its flexed state. No separate stiffening component or additional stamping operation is required.

Plow cutting edge

A plow moldboard cutting edge includes a cutting edge blade having a front (leading) face and a rear (trailing) face, with one or more receiving apertures defined therebetween. An elastic bushing is then provided in each of the receiving apertures of the cutting edge blade, with each bushing having a through hole defined therein. The cutting edge blade is then fastened to the lower edge of a plow moldboard by extending fasteners through cutting edge mounting holes defined in the plow moldboard adjacent its lower edge, and then into the through holes of the bushings. The fasteners secure the bushings to the plow moldboard, and thereby mount the cutting edge blade (which is situated about the elastic bushings) to the plow moldboard as well, with the elastic bushings elastically spacing the cutting edge blade from the fasteners. As a result, when the cutting edge blade is driven along a roadway or other surface to be plowed, the elastic bushings elastically suspend the cutting edge blade from the moldboard so that the cutting edge blade rides along the plowing surface and better conforms to the plowing surface's contour. The elastic bushings additionally help to avoid shock transmission between the cutting edge blade and moldboard, and assist in reducing wear on the cutting edge blade.

Method and apparatus for managing thread execution in a multithread application

A method for managing the suspension and resumption of threads on an individual basis in an information handling system having an operating system (OS) kernel and a user process having multiple threads of execution. An originating thread issues a pthread_kill( ) service request to the OS kernel to send a specified signal (thread-stop or thread-continue) to a specified target thread within the same process to suspend or resume execution of the target thread. More particularly, in response to a request from a thread to suspend the execution of the target thread, the OS kernel sends a thread-stop signal (SIGTHSTOP) to the target thread, transferring control within the target thread from a normally executing program portion to a signal interrupt routine. Upon gaining control, the signal interrupt routine issues a service request to the kernel to stop the target thread. In response to a request from a thread to resume execution of the target thread, the OS kernel sends a thread-continue signal (SIGTHCONT) to the target thread to post the waiting target thread and return control to the signal interrupt routine. Upon regaining control, the signal interrupt routine returns control to the program at the point of interrupt.

LED lamp using blue and cyan LEDs and a phosphor

Many thousands of micro-LEDs (e.g., 25 microns per side) are deposited on a substrate. Some of the LEDs are formed to emit a peak wavelength of 450 nm (blue), and some are formed to emit a peak wavelength of 490 nm (cyan). A YAG (yellow) phosphor is then deposited on the LEDs, or a remote YAG layer is used. YAG phosphor is most efficiently excited at 450 nm and has a very weak emission at 490 nm. The two types of LEDs are GaN based and can be driven at the same current. The ratio of the two types of LEDs is controlled to achieve the desired overall color emission of the LED lamp. The blue LEDs optimally excite the YAG phosphor to produce white light having blue and yellow components, and the cyan LEDs broaden the emission spectrum to increase the CRI of the lamp while improving luminous efficiency. Other embodiments are described.

Pillow with positionable inserts

A pillow having positionable inserts is provided. Certain embodiments include inserts that are made from memory foam material formed into a variety of shapes that can assist in correcting the curvature of a user's spine. Some inserts may be made from cylindrical pouches that contain particulate materials. Inserts may be color-coded to correspond to different sizes of inserts or different filling materials. The inserts may be affixed within the pillow or on a bottom end of the pillow with hook and loop fasteners, double stick tape or other fastening means. Certain embodiments may contain measurement indicia, such as an internally located imprinted grid, to assist in precise placement of inserts within the pillow. The measurement indicia can assist physicians in monitoring a patient's progress or in making changes to therapy regimens. Certain embodiments of the pillow may have a cradling end configured to more comfortably cradle a person's head.

Process for making electronic devices having a monolayer diffusion barrier

An epitaxial barrier material provides not only a unique growth medium for growing single crystal structures of elemental metal thereon, but also provides an effective diffusion barrier at extremely thin thicknesses against migration of atoms from the metallization layer into an adjacent semiconductor substrate or low dielectric insulation layer. This invention is particularly advantageous for forming single crystal, transition metal conductor lines, contacts, filled trenches, and / or via plugs, and especially conductor structures based on transition metals of copper, silver, gold, or platinum. These metals are highly attractive for interconnect strategies on account of there respective low resistivity and high reliability characteristics. Processes for making the barrier film in a semiconductor device are also covered. The capability to use copper interconnect strategies coupled with the proviso of an extremely thin barrier film makes possible a significant increase in the component density and a corresponding reduction in the number of layers in large scale integrated circuits, as well as improved performance.

Method and system for managing mechanical respiratory ventilation

A system and computer implemented method for operating a respiratory ventilator ventilating a subject. One or more body signals obtained from the subject indicative of the subject's ventilation are analyzed so as to perform a spirometric assessment of the ventilation. It is then determined whether the spirometric assessment satisfactorily conforms to one or more predetermined spirometric standards. If the spirometric assessment does not satisfactorily conform to the spirometric standard, the operating parameters of the ventilator are adjusted. The invention also provides a system for carrying out the method.
