Method and apparatus for placing discrete parts transversely onto a moving web

This invention pertains to processing continuous webs such as paper, film, composites, and the like, in dynamic continuous processing operations. More particularly, it relates to transferring discrete parts to a continuous web, whether paper, film, composite, or the like. Specifically, the invention relates to methods and apparatus for taking discrete parts from a source in a taking zone, optionally taking the discrete parts as components of a continuous web, onto a transport head on a transfer assembly, severing the discrete parts from the continuous web if received as part of a continuous web, rotating the transfer assembly about a first axis and correspondingly rotating the transport head about a second axis radial to the first axis, to thereby present the discrete parts to a receiver in a transfer zone, and transferring the discrete parts to the receiver in the transfer zone. The invention includes using a roughened taking section on the transport head, interacting with textured surface on the discrete parts, to hold the discrete parts to the transport head, with optional use of suction through the transport head to assist in holding the discrete parts to the transport head. Novel apparatus is included for delivering suction to and through rotating slip rings.

A reinforcing bar splice secures together reinforcing bar ends by utilizing, at both ends, both tapered-thread coupling and coupling involving a filler, such as a grout or an epoxy. The splice may include a central tapered-thread central sleeve or coupler, and a pair of collars that are screwed onto externally-threaded ends of the central sleeve. The central sleeve has a channel therethrough with tapered internal threads at both ends, and a center internal relief. The internal relief is an increased radius center portion that ensures full thread contact between the tapered internal threads and external threaded sections of the rebar ends. The sleeve has externally-threaded ends that are engaged by internally-threaded ends of a pair of collars. Distal to their internally-threaded ends, the collars have filler-material-receiving channels. The channels include plural sloped surfaces for aiding in securing filler material between the collars and the rebar ends.

Cosmetic applicator and method and system for manufacturing the applicator

The present invention relates to a method and system of manufacturing a cosmetic applicator in which a predetermined pattern of flocking bristles are dispensed toward the applicator and are adhered to the applicator by an adhesive. The flocking bristles can be dispensed using a flocking dispenser. The flocking dispenser is moveable in a longitudinal direction forward and backward along the sides and tip of the applicator. During or after movement of the flocking dispenser, the applicator can be rotated around its longitudinal axis. The movement of the flocking dispenser and rotation of the applicator can be controlled to provide the desired pattern of flocking bristles. The density of distribution of the flocking bristles can be controlled by varying the speed of movement and rotation of the applicator and the amount of flocking bristles which are dispensed from the flocking dispenser. For example, a high density of flocking bristles can be applied to extend radially from the tip. The flocking bristles can include one or more types of bristles which differ by one or more of material, cross section, shape, length, diameter or composition.
