Radiometric heating/sensing probe

A radiometric heating / sensing probe for radiating electromagnetic waves of a first frequency capable of heating tissue and detecting electromagnetic waves of a second frequency emitted by the tissue indicating tissue temperature. The probe includes a dual frequency antenna, a signal transmitting path to the antenna and a signal receiving path from the antenna to a radiometer. A diplexer connected between those paths inside the probe includes a quarter wave stub in the form of a shorted slab line-type transmission line in the signal transmitting path. The entire probe package is only about 0.4 in. long and 0.08 in. in diameter so that it can be used in many minimally invasive applications.

Optical resonant gel display

A white or colored thixotropic gel is used in conjunction with an electro-mechanical addressable X-Y pixel array composed of micro-magnet pairs in order to produce a re-writable display surface for forming images. Images are formed on the surface of this display by changing the state of transparency of the gel surface, from semi-solid to semi-liquid as a result of thixotropic bond shearing. In addition, pixels are capsules filled with any given color. Furthermore, each active color capsule is forced upwards by magnetic repulsion between the twin-micro-magnet elements to help form images and break the surface tension of the gel and press against the front layer film and forming a visible pixel or; downwards to help erase the image by means of magnetic attraction between the two micro-magnets located directly underneath each pixel. In an embodiment of this invention, four or more layers of materials are bonded together in a flexible construct in order to provide to users a low-cost electronic paper-like display.

Apparatus and a method for keyboard encoding

The invention is related to a method and a device for use in an apparatus, preferably a portable radiotelephone, equipped with a number of keys. Upon activation of a key, the device detects which key has been activated. The device comprises a signal generating unit which generates an oscillating signal whose character, e.g. frequency, unambiguously corresponds to the activated key. An optical measurement system and method are provided. Pump sample light and probe sample light are delivered through into an anatomical structure of a user. The anatomical structure has molecules having a resonant vibrational frequency equal to the difference between a first optical frequency of the pump sample light and a second optical frequency of the probe sample light, whereby a portion of the probe sample light is inelastically scattered by the molecules as signal light encoded with a physiological event occurring in the molecules, and whereby sample light comprising the signal light exits the anatomical structure. Signal light in the exiting sample light is detected, and an electrical signal representative of the signal light is outputted. The electrical signal is analyzed, and based on this analysis, the presence and the depth of the physiological event in the anatomical structure is determined.

Synchonous transmission network node

In order to enable nodes with a single protocol switch core to be used in a synchronous transmission network carrying both SDH and SONET traffic then one option is to convert traffic between protocols at the various network nodes. For example, if the network node has a switch core arranged for SONET, then when SDH traffic arrives at that node it can first be converted to SONET before being processed by the switch core and then converted back to SDH again if required. Known methods of converting between SONET and SDH are not suited for use at egress points of network nodes where pointer alignment processes do not occur. A new method of converting between SONET and SDH is described which overcomes these problems by reordering the position of stuff columns.

Ion recoil implantation and enhanced carrier mobility in CMOS device

An integrated circuit (IC) includes a CMOS device formed above a semiconductor substrate having ions therein that are implanted in the semiconductor substrate by an ion recoil procedure. The IC preferably, but not necessarily, incorporates sub-0.1 micron technology in the CMOS device. The implanted ions may preferably be germanium ions. A strained-silicon layer is preferably, but not necessarily, formed above the ion-implanted layer of the semiconductor substrate. The strained-silicon layer may be formed by a silicon epitaxial growth on the ion-implanted layer or by causing the ions to recoil into the semiconductor substrate with such energy that a region of the semiconductor substrate in the vicinity of the surface thereof is left substantially free of the ions, thereby forming a strained-silicon layer in the substantially ion-free region.
