Method and system of determining life of turbocharger

In order to accurately determine a life of a turbocharger, the specific use, herein referred to as a “duty cycle” of the turbocharger, should be monitored. However, in order to directly monitor the duty cycle of the turbocharger, there are additional costs of assembly and installation of a turbocharger rotational speed sensor. The present invention determines a life of a turbocharger by indirectly monitoring the duty cycle of the turbocharger through sensors that generally serve a pre-existing purpose within a vehicle or machine. A compressor inlet pressure sensor and compressor outlet pressure sensor are in communication with an electronic control module that includes a life determining algorithm. The life determining algorithm determines the life of the turbocharger based on a relationship between a sensed compressor inlet pressure and a sensed compressor outlet pressure. By monitoring the relationship between the sensed compressor inlet pressure and the sensed compressor outlet temperature, the fatigue and the creep of at least one component of the turbocharger is monitored.

System and method for the dynamic analysis of event data

Disclosed is a system and method for the analysis of event data that enables analysts to create user specified datasets in a dynamic fashion. Performance, equipment and system safety, reliability, and significant event analysis utilizes failure or performance data that are composed in part of time-based records. These data identify the temporal occurrence of performance changes that may necessitate scheduled or unscheduled intervention like maintenance events, trades, purchases, or other actions to take advantage of mitigate or compensate for the observed changes. The criteria used to prompt a failure or performance record can range from complete loss of function to subtle changes in performance parameters that are known to be precursors of more severe events. These specific criteria applied to any explicit specific application and this invention is relevant to this type of data taxonomy and can be applied across all areas in which event data may be collected.

The invention relates to a process and a monitoring device for monitoring an equipment unit, carried out by a processing device in the monitoring device. The process comprises reading at least one sensor signal and determining, on the basis of the at least one sensor signal, whether the equipment unit has been subjected to an unacceptable stress. If the equipment device has been subjected to an unacceptable stress, a start-up lock for the equipment unit is enabled, and lock status information is stored. The step of determining whether the equipment unit has been subjected to an unacceptable stress may comprise criteria that are dependent upon whether the monitoring device is operating in a low-power mode or a normal power mode. When a signal is received that indicates that the equipment unit is to be started up, it is determined whether the start-up lock has been enabled. If it has been enabled, a warning is activated. If, in addition, a non-reversible switch has not been activated, the warning is maintained and further operation of the equipment unit is prevented.
