Catheter with omni-directional optical lesion evaluation

A catheter is adapted to ablate tissue and provide lesion qualitative information on a real time basis, having an ablation tip section with a generally omni-directional light diffusion chamber with one openings to allow light energy in the chamber to radiate the tissue and return to the chamber. The chamber is irrigated at a positive pressure differential to continuously flush the opening with fluid. The light energy returning to the chamber from the tissue conveys a tissue parameter, including without limitation, lesion formation, depth of penetration of lesion, cross-sectional area of lesion, formation of char during ablation, recognition of char during ablation, recognition of char from non-charred tissue, formation of coagulum around the ablation site, differentiation of coagulated from non-coagulated blood, differentiation of ablated from healthy tissue, tissue proximity, and recognition of steam formation in the tissue for prevention of steam pop.

Low profile intravascular ultrasound catheter

The present invention provides low profile intravascular ultrasound catheters adapted to access sites within the patient's body through narrow blood vessels, e.g., the radial artery. In an embodiment, a low profile catheter comprises an catheter sheath, a short guidewire receiver attached to the distal end of the catheter sheath, and a telescope assembly at the proximal end. The catheter sheath comprises a main portion and a tapered portion for increased flexibility toward the distal end of the catheter. In one embodiment, a rotatable and translatable imaging core is received within the catheter sheath for ultrasound imaging. A short guidewire receiver is used to allow the imaging core to be advanced farther distally with respect to the distal end of the catheter. In an embodiment, the catheter sheath extends through a portion of the telescope assembly to provide enhanced support of the imaging core within the telescope assembly.

Method and system of MR imaging with simultaneous fat suppression and T1 inversion recovery contrast

A method and system for fat suppression with T1-weighted imaging includes a pulse sequence generally constructed to have a non-spectrally selective IR pulse that is played out immediately before a spectrally selective IR tip-up pulse. Thereafter, a fat suppression RF pulse is played out followed by the acquisition of fat-suppressed MR data. The pulse sequence maintains T1 contrast by not perturbing the non-fat signals from the IR preparation. The pulse sequence also ensures that the blood pool signal is homogeneously suppressed from the non-spectrally selective IR RF pulse. The pulse sequence also allows for increased fat suppression and provides flexibility for adjustment of the degree of fat suppression without affecting the view acquisition order for an image acquisition segment.

Methods and systems for disrupting calcified walls of biological conduits and calcified lesions therein

The present system is directed in various embodiments to rotational atherectomy systems and methods generally. More specifically, a method for methodically softening and otherwise disrupting calcification located within atherosclerotic plaque, lesion or occlusion and / or within the wall of a biological conduit or lumen. For example, calcification within the occlusion and / or intimal and / or medial layer walls of a blood vessel, e.g., an artery, may be methodically softened or otherwise disrupted with various embodiments of the present invention. The softening and / or disruption of the calcification in the walls of the exemplary artery is accomplished in conjunction with abrading removal of any occlusion located on the interior surface of the exemplary artery and, therefore, located within the artery's lumen. This result is achieved by use of at least one eccentric head that, during high-speed rotation within the exemplary lumen, has been found to produce a combination of a low-frequency orbital motion comprising a force that is exerted against the lumen wall, with concomitant deflection of same, and / or a high-frequency pulsatile frequency, also with concomitant exertion of force against the lumen wall and deflection of same. These force-driven deflections produce a series of shockwaves within the layers of the exemplary artery's wall layers, resulting in systematic disruptions of any calcification within the intimal and / or medial layers of the subject artery. In addition, any calcification within the occlusion is also softened and disrupted. Thus, as this process proceeds, the compliance of the vessel, as well as the lesion itself, is increased.
