Device control via digitally stored program content

A method and system of controlling devices with digitally stored content. Devices such as home electronic appliances, lighting systems, heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, home security systems and home entertainment systems are controlled from a single, centralized device. A set top box (STB) stores scripts that include program content for controlling the operation of a plurality of these devices from the STB. A user of the STB selects the desired scripts, and the STB accesses the selected scripts from storage based on a triggering mechanism such as time, content, event, etc. The STB selectively controls operation of certain devices designated in the script. The method provides ease of control over multiple and diverse devices, applications and media within a user's own home environment, with more functionality and flexibility than currently available.

Creation of an object within an object hierarchy structure

An object generator provides for creation of object(s) in an object hierarchy structure. In response to a command to expand a node / object, the object generator provides an initiator node that facilitates generation of a new object within the object hierarchy upon expansion of the node. A display component concurrently displays the initiator node with the expanded node. The initiator node used for creating objects placed (e.g., in-line) within an object hierarchy structure. To create a new object, an instruction (e.g., user input) to expand a node having a initiator node is received. By selecting the initiator node and entering a name, an object of type defined by the initiator node is created. For example, once the object is created the user can enter information defining parameter(s) of the object. Information can be entered through a user interface box (e.g., text box) that is displayed upon the creation of the object. Also, a grid can overlay the object hierarchy structure allowing information to be entered directly into grid cell(s). The grid can further be employed to display defined parameter(s).

Programmable lighting device

A flashlight (1) having a control unit (4) with a push button (12) for activating the flashlight (1). The control unit (4) connects to a computer via USB port, whereby user-configurable control information is downloaded. A computer program running on the computer enables operating conditions of the flashlight to be selected by a user according to predetermined types of activation e.g. of the push button (12). The operating conditions are collated into operating instructions associated with the predetermined types of activation. The operating instructions are converted into byte code and downloaded to and stored on a memory in the control unit (4). Upon detecting a predetermined activation type, the control unit accesses the operating conditions and configures the flashlight accordingly.

Non-perspective variable-scale map displays

Map displays have been an important element in the feature set of in-car navigation systems. Actually, with modem equipment extending such system functionality to personal digital assistants (PDAs) and cellular telephones, virtually all travelers may use and benefit from the present invention. Early digital displays were monochrome, single-line-vector, planar representations. Color, area fill, scale-dependent attribute selection, labeling, heading-up rotation, line thickness, signs and icons have all been added to make the display more informative and intuitive. Still today, the designer is challenged to provide a more informative, less distracting display to serve the multitasking driver. More recently, perspective view and 3D objects have gained popularity because of their added utility as well as aesthetic appeal. Just as the planar map is a special case of the perspective map, perspective is a special case of the variable-scale map. This disclosure offers some approaches to the use of non-perspective continuous variable-scale maps to solve inherent problems of more conventional navigation map displays.

Telecommunications system power supply

An underwater telecommunications system has a first underwater cable for carrying data traffic, one or more underwater repeaters, and an underwater power network for supplying power to the repeaters. By providing a separate cable for some or all of the power supply, the power route may be made shorter, thus more power can be delivered, therefore more repeaters can be used, which enables more fiber pairs to be laid, and thus the capacity to be increased.

System for temporary fixation of an implantable medical device

A medical fixation system for temporary fixation of an implantable medical device such as a short lead pacemaker outside of the heart in a larger blood vessel such as the superior or inferior vena cava. The fixation mechanism or element is temporary in nature in that the fixation holds the implantable medical device in place until the implantable medical device is grown in to the wall of the vessel and the short lead attached to the implantable medical device and implanted in the heart is grown in. The cell tissue surrounding the implantable medical device and the short lead then keeps the implantable medical device in place without the temporary fixation element.

Secure public key acceleration

In an embodiment, a system is provided in which the private key is managed in hardware and is not visible to software. The system may provide hardware support for public key generation, digital signature generation, encryption / decryption, and large random prime number generation without revealing the private key to software. Service Access Method And Apparatus

The invention may be embodied as a method of selecting a service and inputting information to that service. In one such method, an input device having keys is provided. When such a key is pressed and released quickly, the user indicates a desire to enter a symbol on the key in order to enter symbols of an entry string. In addition, one or more of the keys may also be used to identify a service and also supply that service with the entry string. For example, by pressing and holding such a key, the entry string may be delimited and then sent to a service corresponding to the pressed key. In this manner, a single key press may be used to both delimit an entry string and also send the entry string to the service. The service may use the delimited entry string to retrieve information, which is then supplied to the input device.
