Load balancing in wireless communication network

For load balancing in a wireless communication network comprising at least one subscriber terminal (T1, T2, T2) and a plurality of access points (AP1, AP2, AP3), a load control device (21; 110) is used which is located outside of said subscriber terminal, wherein said load control device is adapted to process information related to a load in said wireless communication network and to instruct roaming of said subscriber terminal from an associated access point to another one of said plurality of access points. Access point status information (APST) determined in said plurality of access points (S10; S110) is received and communication status information related to said plurality of access points (S20; S120) is determined. The subscriber terminal processes (S20; S120) these information into roaming support information (RSUP), which are in turn processed (S40; S160) in said load control device an access point related load based roaming analysis. On this basis, it is decided (S50; S170) by the load control device, whether said subscriber terminal is to be associated with another one of said plurality of access points.

Padding time-slice frames with useful data

Provided are apparatuses and methods for padding a series of real-time service time-slice bursts with related non-real-time service data in a digital broadcast transmission system. Real-time services (e.g., streaming video) are formed into a series of bursts or slots as a single frame. Available capacity within each slot of the frame is filled using related non-real-time service data (e.g., a file download). Receivers may receive individual bursts from within the frame and / or may receive the entire frame in order to receive the related non-real-time service data.

Networks

The invention relates to data networks, and to nodes making up parts of data networks, arranged to derive information relating to the characterisation of paths taken by data travelling between nodes in the networks. Path characterisation information is fed back from a receiver of data to a provider of data, and informs nodes subsequently forwarding data of characteristics of the downstream path. Also described are routing and related controlling nodes and methods for using such path characterisation information to make informed routing and other decisions when forwarding data in a data network.

System and method for canceling co-channel interference on-board a satellite

Provided are systems and methods for minimizing co-channel interference on-board a satellite. An up-link signal received by the satellite is post-compensated, where the up-link signal includes a desired signal transmitted by a first transmitter and an interfering signal transmitted by a second transmitter. The post-compensating includes identifying the interfering signal based on post-compensation parameters. In addition, a down-link signal to be transmitted from the satellite to a receiver is pre-compensated. The pre-compensation process includes determining gain relations between a gain of a first satellite antenna which transmits the down-link in a direction of the receiver and a gain of a second satellite antenna which transmits an interfering signal in the direction of the receiver, sampling and scaling interfering signals at the satellite based on the gain relations, and estimating a co-channel down-link interference component that the down-link signal is expected to experience on a path to the receiver.

Method and apparatus for throttling audio packets according to gateway processing capacity

InactiveUS6856613B1Increase in sizeThrottles the rate that audio packets are outputInterconnection arrangementsDigital computer detailsComputer hardwareAudio signal
Rather than dropping packets, the invention throttles the rate that audio packets are output from a voice gateway by increasing the VoIP packet size. An encoder in the voice gateway encodes audio signals into audio packets. A processor in the voice gateway then switches the audio packets to the IP network. The invention throttles the rate that these VoIP packets are switched from the voice gateway by varying the number of samples of the incoming audio signals that are encoded into each packet payload. By increasing the packet payload size in the VoIP packets, the voice gateway can switch the same amount of audio data in fewer VoIP packets. Producing fewer VoIP packets increases the available capacity of the voice gateway for processing audio signals for more calls. In other words, encoding more audio data into each VoIP packet keeps the voice gateway from having to drop packets. If capacity in the voice gateway increases (the number of incoming calls decreases), the voice gateway can resume generating VoIP packets at the original packet size.

Traffic protection in a communication network

A loop protection mechanism including dynamically determining a link connecting two adjacent nodes of a loop in a communication network in accordance with a predefined criterion, and reconfiguring the loop so that the loop is broken at the determined link which is an optimal link in terms of the predefined criterion. The breaking of the loop enables for example to utilize loop-free technologies (e.g. Ethernet) in a physical loop architecture.

Wide-band multi-format audio/video production system with frame-rate conversion

A multi-format digital video production system enables a user to process an input video program to produce an output version of the program in a final format which may have a different frame rate, pixel dimensions, or both. An internal production format of 24 fps is preferably chosen to provide the greatest compatibility with existing and planned formats associated with HDTV standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 high-definition television, and film. Images are re-sized horizontally and vertically by pixel interpolation, thereby producing larger or smaller image dimensions so as to fill the particular needs of individual applications. Frame rates are adapted by inter-frame interpolation or by traditional schemes, including “3:2 pull-down” for 24-to-30 fps conversions. Simple speed-up (for 24-to-25 conversions) or slow-down (for 25-to-24 conversions) for playback, or by manipulating the frame rate itself using a program storage facility with asynchronous reading and writing capabilities. The step of converting the signal to a HDTV format is preferably performed using a modified upconversion process for wideband signals (utilizing a higher sampling clock frequency) and a resizing to HDTV format frame dimensions in pixels.

Call distribution in distributed call centers

A method and / or system for receiving or accepting and processing calls within a telephone network having lines, including a voice and a data channel, for connecting a caller to subscriber groups connected to the network. A subscriber group has an assigned network identifier via which all members of the subscriber group are able to be called by a caller. The calls intended for one subscriber group are distributed via a control to the individual members of the group on the basis of specifiable criteria, data records assigned to one connection being exchanged via the data channel, and the control being carried out by a control unit which is integrated in the network and has access to complete data records. A subscriber group may have an assigned control unit which automatically decides on the connection of a call to a special member of the group.

A DBS distribution network (100, 90) is modified with a secondary transmission bi-directional capability below 950 MHz by adding filters to separate modified mobile-communications (60) frequencies from typical DBS services. DBS subscriber termination points function as extremely localized ultra-miniature cell sites within a building. Third generation (3G) cellular networks and second-generation (2G) cellular networks are together merged with DBS networks. The modified network simultaneously handles traffic in known and future cellular air interface standards such as: UMTS, GSM, TDMA, CDMA. Cellular mobile radio terminals do not have to be modified. Signals traverse on non-utilized DBS frequencies. DBS active elements are modified, and new components are provided.

Method and System for Load Balancing of Large File Transfers on a Wireless Network

A method and system identifies a data file for transfer to a user. The invention also detects the movement of the user device from which the data file transfer was made and calculates a projected path for movement of the user device. Based on the projected path of movement, the sections of the requested data file are transferred in parallel to node areas where the user device is projected to move according to the projected path. As the user enters a node area, the section of the data file downloaded to that node area is locally transferred to the user device and thereby substantially reducing download time of a large data file.
