Fuel reformer for mounting on a vehicle

A fuel reformer suited for mounting on a vehicle is provided. A raw material gas containing methanol and water is vaporized at a vaporization section 30. The vaporized gas flows horizontally to a reforming section 60 with monolithic catalyst 70. The reforming section is divided into two sides, a front side 62 and a rear side 64, with an interconnecting pipe 66 bent at 180 degrees, for connecting the front and rear sides. By making the material gas flow horizontally, even when the reformer is mounted to a vehicle which has a larger space in its horizontal direction than in its vertical direction, especially a small passenger car, the contact time period between gas and catalyst can be extended. By bending the reforming section by 180 degrees, the size of the reformer can be reduced so that the reformer is suited for mounting on a vehicle having limited space. Because the vaporization section 30 and the CO reducing section 80 can be placed adjacent to each other, by using heat generated at the CO reducing section, the heat loss during pre-heating of the methanol and water can be reduced.

Method and system for tank refilling using active fueling speed control

Disclosed is an improved analytical method that can be utilized by hydrogen filling stations for directly and accurately calculating the end-of-fill temperature in a hydrogen tank that, in turn, allows for improvements in the fill quantity while tending to reduce refueling time. The calculations involve calculation of a composite heat capacity value, MC, from a set of thermodynamic parameters drawn from both the tank system receiving the gas and the station supplying the gas. These thermodynamic parameters are utilized in a series of simple analytical equations to define a multi-step process by which target fill times, final temperatures and final pressures can be determined. The parameters can be communicated to the station directly from the vehicle or retrieved from a database accessible by the station. Because the method is based on direct measurements of actual thermodynamic conditions and quantified thermodynamic behavior, significantly improved tank filling results can be achieved.

Single stage, dual channel turbine fuel pump

A single stage, dual channel turbine fuel pump for use in a vehicle fuel delivery system, generally including a lower casing, an upper casing, an impeller and a motor. Both the lower and upper casings have a pair of concentric, annular grooves formed on their surfaces, where the two lower annular grooves are in fluid communication with a fuel passage inlet and the two upper annular grooves are in fluid communication with a fuel passage outlet. Rotation of the impeller causes a portion of the incoming fuel to be diverted into an inner lower groove and another portion into an outer lower groove. Once in the lower grooves, the fuel communicates with other parts of the pumping chamber such that it fills the upper grooves as well. Generally independent, helical fuel flow patterns are formed which cause the fuel to become pressurized as it flows from the inlet to the outlet. These helical fuel flow patterns allow for axial communication between vane pockets and corresponding grooves, but do not allow for radial communication.

Combustion device

In a combustion unit, a fuel collision member is disposed between a fuel injection valve and a combustion chamber. The fuel collision member is positioned so that, a part of fuel injected from said fuel injection valve is introduced into the combustion chamber while colliding with the fuel collision member, and the other part of fuel is directly introduced into the combustion chamber without colliding with the fuel collision member. Thus, fuel introduced into the combustion chamber is atomized while being introduced into the combustion chamber in a wide range.
