Electrically controlled optical shield for eye protection against bright light

An active device provides protection from the sun or other bright light source for improved vision, using a variable opacity medium that is electronically controlled to cast a shadow on an eye of a user and / or to otherwise reduce the amount of the light incident on the eye, thereby reducing glare. Miniature cameras monitor the user's eye movements and the scene in front of the user. If a bright light is detected, one or more dark spots is created in the variable opacity medium that acts as a shade or light filter for a pupil of the eye. The variable opacity medium, cameras, and associated electronics can be used in connection with eyeglasses (including sunglasses), as part of a device worn by the user (such as a helmet), a windshield, mirror, or other optical element having a view port through which light can be seen by the user.

Vehicle air conditioning and heating system providing engine on and engine off operation

An air conditioning system for use in an over-the-road or off road vehicle is provided that allows operation during both engine on and engine off conditions. The system utilizes a variable speed, motor driven compressor controlled by an intelligent power generation management controller. This controller selects from one of the available sources of power on the vehicle to drive the compressor, and modulates the compressor speed and capacity based on operational parameters and source availability and depletion. The controller may also operate a coolant or air heater to provide heating to the interior compartments.

Vehicle Air Conditioning and Heating System Providing Engine On and Off Operation

A heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system for use in an over-the-road or off road vehicle is provided. The HVAC system may be operated regardless of the operational state of the engine. That is, the HVAC system may be operated to condition the interior compartments of an over-the-road vehicle while the engine is running and while the engine is in a no-idle (off) condition. In general, the HVAC system efficiently shares one or more typical air conditionings components with those already found in the vehicle. In one instance, the HVAC system operates an electrically-driven compressor when a belt-driven compressor is idle. In another case, the HVAC system operates both an electrically-driven compressor and a no-idle condenser when a belt-driven compressor and condenser are idle. In yet another embodiment, the HVAC system shares an evaporator.

Electric vehicle and vehicle charging system

When a current flows through a battery, a resistance loss proportional to the square of the current is produced by an internal resistance component of the current. In a case where the temperature of a heat capacity element is raised, a charging current is controlled such that prescribed thermal energy is provided to the heat capacity element by this resistance loss. Air is induced into a power supply unit through a vehicle compartment air exhaust duct. Then, the thermal energy stored in the heat capacity element is transferred to the air induced into the power supply unit. The air to which the thermal energy has been provided from the heat capacity element is blown out toward a vehicle compartment space by a fan.

Fuel efficient dynamic air dam system

Active, aerodynamic controller that describes a method for dynamically controlling airflow using computer controlled movable air dams and airfoils on motor vehicles. It is well known that motor vehicles generally have a great deal of aerodynamic friction also known as drag. Fuel efficiency is greatly affected by a vehicle's aerodynamic drag. Aerodynamic drag is caused by both induced drag and parasitic drag. Parasite drag is somewhat fixed by the overall design and shape of a vehicle. Parasite drag is caused primarily by the laminar flow of air over the smooth surfaces of the vehicle's hood, roof, windows, side mirrors and door panels. Induced drag is much more variable and is primarily created by the differential pressure effects of air flowing over, under and around a vehicle, as well as the relative airflow caused by both ground effect and atmospheric air density and wind. This invention serves to actively minimize the effects of induced drag thus reducing the amount of fuel used by vehicles fitted with this invention.
