A language conversion feature allows a person in one language to speak in that language to an IVR application operating in a different language.

System and method for embedded audio coding with implicit auditory masking

The embedded audio coder (EAC) is a fully scalable psychoacoustic audio coder which uses a novel perceptual audio coding approach termed “implicit auditory masking” which is intermixed with a scalable entropy coding process. When encoding and decoding an audio file using the EAC, auditory masking thresholds are not sent to a decoder. Instead, the masking thresholds are automatically derived from already coded coefficients. Furthermore, in one embodiment, rather than quantizing the audio coefficients according to the auditory masking thresholds, the masking thresholds are used to control the order that the coefficients are encoded. In particular, in this embodiment, during the scalable coding, larger audio coefficients are encoded first, as the larger components are the coefficients that contribute most to the audio energy level and lead to a higher auditory masking threshold.

The preamble comprises symbols transmitted at a rate lower than that of the following data. The lower rate significantly increases the probability that decoding of the preamble symbols will be error-free. Communication line control information can be included in the preamble, thereby ensuring that line control information is reliably transferred over the channel. The preamble's first symbol can be transmitted at the lower symbol rate and at an increased power level, thereby reliably delimiting the beginning of a transmission. The end of the message can be reliably delimited by sending the first symbol which contains only bits from a next cell of information at a lower symbol rate, and including an extra bit in that symbol. The extra bfit can indicate to a receiver when the last cell of information begins.
