A system and method for improving the coding efficiency of motion vector information in video coding. According to various embodiments, a list of motion vector predictor candidates is arranged according to predefined rules. Each motion vector also has a reference index associated with it. One of the motion vector candidates is then selected as a predictor based on predefined rules, or the selection is explicitly signaled in the bitstream. The reference index associated with the selected motion vector is used as a reference index for the current block. The reference index is predicted along with the motion vector. Such embodiments can improve the compression efficiency of modern video codecs.

Apparatus and methods for entropy-encoding or entropy-decoding using an initialization of context variables

An entropy encoding / decoding scheme uses an arithmetic encoder / decoder together with a context modeler for performing a context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding, which is especially suited for video compression applications. The context modeler includes an initializer for initializing the context modeler by determining and providing initialization probability information to the arithmetic encoder, the initialization probability information to be used by the arithmetic encoder for processing a start symbol of a symbol sequence. The initializer is operative to determine the initialization probability information based on an estimation of the symbol statistics relating to the start symbol such that an initialization probability distribution is different from an equi-probable distribution for all symbols of the symbol set. By means of the initialization, the context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding / decoding scheme is optimally adjusted before processing a start symbol of the symbol sequence so that no bit rate compression losses because of a delayed context-based adaptation are introduced.

Template matching scheme using multiple predictors as candidates for intra-prediction

An apparatus and method for spatial encoding of intra-predictions for a current block of a video sequence without the need to average across a number of best template matches. The encoder identifies and sorts the best template matches for the current block within previously coded and reconstructed blocks which neighbor the current block of video. In response to determining actual predictive error for the sorted list of matches, a selector is generated identifying which of the sorted templates is optimal. The selector is then communicated for receipt by the decoder, which is adapted for performing the same template matching and sorting, which is followed by selection of the optimum candidate in response to using the selector. In response to the selector information the decoder can provide optimum template matching without the compromise or overhead of taking averages across the best template candidates.

Enhanced block-based motion estimation algorithms for video compression

Method, systems and software are proposed for obtaining for blocks of a first image similar blocks of a second image (the “reference image”). The blocks of the first image are processed sequentially, for each block trying out a number of candidate locations in the second image and evaluating a cost function for each. Each candidate location in the second image is displaced by a respective motion vector from the block of the first image. In a first aspect of the invention the cost function is a function of a predicted motion vector for future blocks of the first image (i.e. blocks of the first image which have not yet been processed). In a second aspect of the invention the motion vectors are given by location values which are not all whole pixel spacings, halves of the pixel spacing, or quarters of the pixel spacing.

Architecture for stack robust fine granularity scalability

The present invention relates to an architecture for stack robust fine granularity scalability (SRFGS), more particularly, SRFGS providing simultaneously temporal scalability and SNR scalability. SRFGS first simplifies the RFGS temporal prediction architecture and then generalizes the prediction concept as the following: the quantization error of the previous layer can be inter-predicted by the reconstructed image in the previous time instance of the same layer. With this concept, the RFGS architecture can be extended to multiple layers that forming a stack to improve the temporal prediction efficiency. SRFGS can be optimized at several operating points to fit the requirements of various applications while the fine granularity and error robustness of RFGS are still remained. The experiment results show that SRFGS can improve the performance of RFGS by 0.4 to 3.0 dB in PSNR.

Such an approach has been found to provide improved compression efficiency thereby reducing the volume of trace data produced.
