Systems and methods that acquire digital slides and other large images and store these images into commercially available PACS systems using DICOM-standard messaging are provided. A digital slide or other large two-dimensional image is acquired and each separate resolution level of the digital slide or large image is divided into a series of regions that are each identified as a DICOM image. All of the regions at the same resolution in the digital slide or other large image are collectively identified as a DICOM series. A plurality of DICOM series, representing multiple resolution levels in a digital slide are collectively identified and stored as a DICOM study.

The invention provides a scanning focus number reducing method of a digital slide scanner. The method comprises the following steps: placing a slide on a scanning platform; scanning the slide to obtain a slide preview of the slide; adjusting the scanning area to be the entire slide; identifying foci; focusing to obtain focal lengths of foci; calculating focal planes according to the focal lengths. The mounting precision of a scanner slide mounting platform and an optical system can be effectively improved, so that a possibility is provided for clearly scanning ultra-large slides (the pixel value of a digital image can reach 100000 x 100000) with few foci. The digital slide storage system comprises a metadata storage module used for storing metadata, and providing writing and reading interfaces of the metadata; an image storage module used for storing slide image data; a slide reconstruction module connected with the image storage module and used for cutting image layers under various magnifications into a plurality of small slide images in a specific patch size; a transmission module connected with the image storage module and the metadata storage module and used for reading slide metadata and image data of different manufacturers, and transmitting the slide metadata and image data to corresponding storage modules; and a browsing module connected with the image storage module and the metadata storage module and used for acquiring and displaying the slide images. The invention further comprises a digital slide browsing method based on the digital slide storage system. The digital slide storage system and the digital slide browsing method provided by the invention can efficiently store digital slides, and can realize instant browsing of the digital slides.
