A portable, personal apparatus for treating drinking water comprises a generally tubular or cylindrical filter housing containing filtration media and water-permeable screen or mesh or felt or membrane or netting layer at the top and bottom ends of the filter. The design of the apparatus involves the bottle exterior and interior contouring to the filter and enables the efficient and rapid gravity flow of water in through the filter. The apparatus may be configured such that water is first passed through a top reservoir designed to receive water, followed by a porous mesh, followed by granular filtration and antimicrobial media agitated by turbulent motion of influent water, followed by a porous mesh before reaching a durable and reusable water containment vessel.

A solution for treating a fluid, such as water, is provided. The solution determines an ultraviolet transparency of a fluid before or as the fluid enters a disinfection chamber. In the disinfection chamber, the fluid can be irradiated by ultraviolet radiation to harm microorganisms that may be present in the fluid. Apparatus and methods for employing electrical properties of water to indicate the level of filtered water in a filtered water container. The container is fitted with a hopper that holds unfiltered water. The hopper is fitted at its base with a removable and replaceable filter cartridge. Water is filtered by draining through the filter medium contained in the filter cartridge into the lower portion of the container. The water level in the lower portion of the container is monitored by means of one or more water level detector strips in the lower portion of the container. By adding alkaline material in addition to a nitrate containing compounds, the amount of nitrate containing compound added can be reduced by at least 10% as compared to the amount of nitrate that would theoretically need to be added in the absence of alkaline material to achieve a comparable lower concentration of atmospheric hydrogen sulfide and dissolved sulfides in the wastewater stream.

The invention is directed to purification of liquids, such as drinking water using filters, wherein filtration is effected while the liquid flows upwardly. The invention includes both the method and a device enabling the method to be carried out. The invention relates to a system for controlling the concentration of a detrimental substance, in particular H₂S, in a sewer network. The system comprises a monitoring device arranged at a monitoring location in the sewer network and at least one dosing controller arranged at a dosing location upstream the monitoring location. The monitoring device is arranged for providing a signal indicating a measured H₂S concentration at the monitoring location and for transmitting a radio frequency signal carrying information about the H₂S concentration. The dosing controller is arranged for receiving the radio frequency signal, deriving a concentration signal based on the radio frequency signal, calculating a dose of a preselected additive based on the derived concentration signal, and supplying a dosing signal to a dosing device, causing the dosing device to add the calculated dose at the dosing location. Advantageously, the calculating of a dose also takes into account critical process indicators acquired at the dosing location. A main controller is arranged to communicate with the at controllers, and various control tasks are distributed among the main controller and the dosing controllers.

A bottle comprises a cap, a reservoir having an open top closeable by the cap, and a filter holder that houses a filter, the filter holder being coupled to the cap such that a liquid in the reservoir is filtered by the filter as the liquid is being consumed, and the filter is fluidly decoupled from the reservoir when the cap is disengaged from the reservoir. Adsorbents and methods for removing cations of heavy metals from a medium are provided. The adsorbents comprise a porous media in which at least one oxygen-containing compound of iron, copper, aluminum, zirconium, titanium and combinations thereof is incorporated. The oxygen-containing compound may be incorporated into the porous media by impregnation or dispersion of a suitable precursor of such a compound. The precursor may be further treated to yield the oxygen-containing compound. Such adsorbents are particularly useful for removing lead and/or other metal cations from the environment and may be used in treating drinking water sources.

The engine may comprise a highly water swellable material. The casing may comprise at least one flow port. The engine may expand from said first position to said second position after a predetermined amount of time when contacted with water. The flow port may become at least substantially blocked, directly or indirectly, by the engine when the engine is in said second position. A system for enhancing water is described. The system includes a housing with an inlet and an outlet, source water at the inlet, which can flow through a filter component in the housing and thus become treated water, and at least one enhancement module that can dispense an enhancement into the treated water as it flows through the outlet. Water can flow through the system only by the force of gravity, pressure in a building's water line, and/or hand pumps. Enhancement that can be used in the system include flavorings, dyes, minerals, vitamins, herbal supplements, nutritional supplements, phytonutrients, probiotics, homoepathic remedies, amino acids, enzymes, hormones, standard prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications, and combinations thereof. A control is also provided, through which a consumer can regulate an amount of enhancement that is added to the treated water.

A gravity fed carbon block water filter includes activated carbon particles; a binder material interspersed with the activated carbon particles; and a lead scavenger coupled to at least one of the activated carbon particles and binder material, the lead scavenger being for removing lead from water, where a lead concentration in a final liter of effluent water filtered by the filter is less than about 10 μg/liter after about 151 liters (40 gallons) of source water filtration, the source water having a pH of 8.5 and containing 135-165 parts per billion total lead with 30-60 parts per billion thereof being colloidal lead greater than 0.1 μm in diameter, and where the water has an average flow rate of at least 0.1 liter per minute through the filter with a head pressure of between approximately 0.1 and 1.0 psi.

Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for point of use location treatment of potable water supplies on demand on board passenger vehicles, such as aircraft. The systems described generally provide increased safety features, alternate ultraviolet light sources, and reduced power consumption.

The present invention relates to a low pressure water filter and dispenser system for use in a refrigerator which enables an effluent from said system exhibiting a log 6 bacteria reduction and a log 4 virus reduction with pressures as low as 0.35 kg/cm² (5 psi).
