Improved approaches for providing electromagnetic interference shielding to one or more electrical components within a housing of a portable electronic device are disclosed. According to one aspect of certain embodiments, an electromagnetic shield can be attached to one or more edges of a substrate (e.g., printed circuit board) provided within a housing of a portable electronic device. Advantageously, this allows the substrate space to be efficiently utilized such that relatively wide electrical components can be provided on the substrate without having to further increase the width of the substrate to provide space for an EMI shielding structure and its attachment to the substrate. The housing of the portable electronic device can be compact, such as a low profile housing.

A hydraulic system for an actuator provides staged operation during extend and retract. A pair of reversible pumps are conjointly driven by a reversible motor. A relief valve in the retract circuit directs fluid to tank when fluid pressure increases above a predetermined value. An unloader valve in the extend circuit is responsive to pressure at a first stage pump to direct flow to tank when the pressure increases above a second predetermined value. A non-return check valve connected between the pumps in the extend circuit closes the flow circuit to the second stage pump during high loads, so that the flow from the second stage pump goes to tank, and the return flow from the actuator goes only to the first stage pump. The non-return check valve is responsive (via a signal line to the retract circuit portion) to the pressure in the extend and retract circuit portions.

An integrated point of sale terminal for processing multiple payment types including payment by check includes a compact housing, a processor, and memory. The housing has a base shaped to sit on a merchant counter and has a document slot for receiving a check. The processor is disposed in the housing, and the memory is in communication with the processor. The payment terminal is located at the point of sale during use to allow a store merchant to accept multiple payment types. The payment terminal further includes a magnetic ink character recognition device for reading a string of magnetic ink characters on the check. The magnetic ink character recognition device is affixed to the housing at the document slot and is in communication with the processor. Further, the payment terminal includes an imaging device for capturing an image of the check. The processor is programed to process multiple payment types including processing a checking account transaction when the check is placed in a document slot.

An aircraft medical unit comprises a front panel configured to fit in an aircraft cabin so as to form a divider inside the cabin and a spaced rear panel of substantially the same shape as that of the front panel. An air conditioning unit having a flush-mounted self-contained evaporator assembly adapted for mounting into the front or rear bulkhead of a bus or similar type vehicle. The evaporator assembly includes a specially designed housing to provide a compact self-contained unit that can fit in a small space, such as the bulkhead above a passenger compartment, while the associated compressor and condenser units are distally located. The housing has chamfered top surfaces so as to provide additional clearance within the bulkhead during installation, and a floor pan with two sloping surfaces forming an inverted apex.
