Device for computerized dynamic posturography and a method for balance assessment

InactiveUS20080228110A1Determining and training an individual's ability to recover balanceStable functionPerson identificationSensorsUniversal jointDynamic balance
A device for balance training and assessing dynamic balance by measuring a subject's ability to react to perturbations. A universal joint assembly is translated at the base of a support plate while a top plate on which the subject stands is fixed against translation. The universal joint permits the attached top plate to rotate about at least one and preferably multiple axes, and the subject must control balance following the translation of the universal joint. All components are housed in a one-piece platform assembly, made up of two plates in which the components are mounted. An existing force plate measurement system is placed on the top plate, and the subject stands thereon during use. A virtual environment, by image-creating devices, may be used to create a realistic sensation of tripping and general postural instability, or shifting of the support surface.

Artificial intervertebral disc

An artificial disc having a pair of opposing baseplates, for seating against opposing vertebral bone surfaces, separated by a ball and socket joint that includes a ball compression locked to a post extending from one of the baseplates. The ball is captured within a curvate socket formed in a peak of a convex structure attached to the other of the baseplates. The socket is formed by opposing curvate surfaces, one on the convex structure and one on the other of the baseplates. While the ball angulates freely in the socket, the rotation of the ball in the socket has a limited range due to interference between a protrusion on the convex structure that extends into the socket and a curvate recess on the ball. The ball and socket joint therefore permits the baseplates to rotate relative to one another through a limited range and also angulate relative to one another.

Methods for increasing the efficiency of recombinant AAV product

The present invention relates to methods and compositions for increasing the production of high titre stocks of recombinant AAV (rAAV) through regulation of expression of the AAV REP and CAP proteins. The methods and compositions of the invention are based on the observation that the low level expression of the AAV REP protein increases the production of AAV viral capsid protein and efficiency of packaging resulting in production of higher titre recombinant viral stocks. The invention encompasses recombinant AAV vectors that direct the expression of AAV REP and CAP proteins and the use of such vectors for the production of novel stable cell lines capable of generating high titre rAAV vectors. The invention provides methods for regulating the expression of the AAV REP gene at the transcriptional and post-translational level. The methods and compositions of the invention can be used to produce high titre stocks of rAAV which can be used in gene therapy for the purpose of transferring genetic information into appropriate host cells for the management and correction of human diseases including inherited and acquired disorders.

Logical partitioning via hypervisor mediated address translation

A method, system, and apparatus for mediating address translation in a logically partitioned data processing system is provided. In one embodiment, a firmware component receives from an operating system within a logical partition a request to access a physical resource. The firmware component, responsive to a determination that the physical resource has been allocated to the logical partition, modifies an address translation table, if necessary, to allow access to the physical resource by the operating system. The operating system is prevented from directly modifying the address translation table, thus preventing potential interference between operating systems within the logically partitioned data processing system.

Antisense gene systems of pollination control for hybrid seed production

A process is described for producing hybrid seed using male-sterile plants created by employing molecular techniques to manipulate antisense DNA and other genes that are capable of controlling the production of fertile pollen in plants. Transformation techniques are used to introduce constructs containing antisense DNA and other genes into plants. Said plants are functionally male-sterile and are useful for the production of hybrid seed by the crossing of said male-sterile plants with pollen from male-fertile plants. Hybrid seed production is simplified and improved by this invention and can be extended to plant crop species for which commercially acceptable hybrid seed production methods are not currently available.

Locking compression hip screw

A reverse obliquity fracture of the proximal femur is poorly secured with current generation hip screws, frequently necessitating the use of intramedullary fracture fixation devices or external fixation hardware. This compression hip screw comprises a femoral head lag screw, side plate, locking plug, and compressing screw, which can be assembled in a locked mode, preventing lateral translation of the lag screw within the side plate. In the locked mode, the proximal fracture fragment(s) are prevented from displacing laterally relative to the distal fragment, as occurs commonly when such a fracture is fixed with a conventional hip screw. No change in routine fracture reduction or insertion technique is required to use this compression hip screw. Additionally, this compression hip screw can be used in a dynamic or sliding mode, if so desired, when used to fix the more common femoral neck or intertrochanteric fracture patterns.

Safety lock mechanism for folding knives

A safety lock mechanism for a folding knife includes a lock plate movably coupled to a handle of the knife for movement along a first direction from an engaged position to a disengaged position, the lock plate biased towards the engaged position. A rocker element is coupled to the lock plate for movement from a locked position to an unlocked position and is configured to prevent translational movement of the lock plate to the disengaged position when the rocker element is in the locked position. A control button coupled to the rocker element allows a user to move the rocker element from the locked position to the unlocked position and to move the lock plate towards the disengaged position to thereby release a blade of the knife.
