Adapting masking thresholds for encoding a low frequency transient signal in audio data

An improved audio coding technique encodes audio having a low frequency transient signal, using a long block, but with a set of adapted masking thresholds. Upon identifying an audio window that contains a low frequency transient signal, masking thresholds for the long block may be calculated as usual. A set of masking thresholds calculated for the 8 short blocks corresponding to the long block are calculated. The masking thresholds for low frequency critical bands are adapted based on the thresholds calculated for the short blocks, and the resulting adapted masking thresholds are used to encode the long block of audio data. The result is encoded audio with rich harmonic content and negligible coder noise resulting from the low frequency transient signal.

Medical access sheath

An expandable sheath is insertable into a patient through an incision. Once inserted and advanced to the target surgical site, the sheath can be expanded to an enlarged diameter. The wall of the sheath is fabricated from a tubular structure comprising filamentous elements that extend axially and at least partially circumferentially along the length of the sheath. The tubular filamentous material is drawn or expanded axially to create the small diameter configuration that is inserted into the patient. A standoff attaches the distal end of the tubular filamentous material to the sheath hub by way of radially movable anchors. Additional filamentous tubular material extends out the proximal end of the hub. A compression mechanism forces the additional filamentous tubular material in the distal direction which causes axial compression and radial or diametric dilation of the working length of the sheath, that part of the sheath that extends beyond the proximal end of the hub. Radial dilation is accomplished with no substantial change in sheath working length.

Dialysis connector and cap having an integral disinfectant

Apparatuses and methods for providing sterile connection during, for example, dialysis therapy. The present invention provides a connector and a cap therefore that easily and readily attaches to a dialysate container and a catheter inserted into a patient's peritoneal cavity. The connector and the cap enable the dialysate to readily transport between the container and the peritoneal cavity while minimizing the potential of contamination therein due to, for example, handling during use. The connector includes a shell that encloses a cap. The cap houses a slit septum and also includes a sealed disinfectant within an interior receptacle. When the catheter or catheter set attaches to the cap, the seal breaks and the disinfectant spreads over the threads between the catheter set and the cap.

Zinc salt compositions for the prevention of dermal and mucosal irritation

The addition of low concentrations of combinations of water-soluble organic salts of zinc to gels, creams, lotions or ointments can increase the ability of these products to reduce or prevent exogenous irritants from causing irritation of the underlying substrate. The addition of low concentrations of combinations of water-soluble organic zinc salts to these gels, creams, lotions or ointments also can reduce the irritation of skin or mucous membranes caused by the addition of potentially-irritating substances such as spermicides, microbicides, fungicides or other therapeutic agents to the gel, cream, lotion or ointment. The advantages of this anti-irritant approach over others, which generally employ high concentrations of single zinc salts, are the reduced potential for zinc toxicity, the reduced potential for toxicity related to zinc itself, and the preservation of the desirable biological properties of potentially-irritating therapeutic substances added to the gel, cream, lotion or ointment.

Thread dispatch mechanism and method for multiprocessor computer systems

InactiveUS20030149716A1Minimizing thread spreadHuman perceptionOperational speed enhancementResource allocationMulti processorThread scheduling
A thread dispatch mechanism dispatches threads in a multiprocessor computer system that has hardware multithreading enabled, thereby allowing each processor to execute multiple threads. The thread dispatch mechanism determines which processors are busy and cannot execute an additional thread, which processors are working on a thread but can still accept an additional thread, and which processors are idle. As threads are ready to be dispatched, each is dispatched to an idle processor instead of a processor that is already working on another thread. If there are no idle processors, the thread is dispatched to a processor working on one or more threads that can still process the new thread. In this manner the thread dispatch mechanism and method of the present invention provides greatly improved consistency in response times between threads and higher throughput compared to prior art methods of dispatching threads.

Steering of directional sound beams

Apparatus is disclosed for steering a directional audio beam that is self-demodulated from an ultrasound carrier. The apparatus includes means for modulating a carrier signal with an audio signal and means for adjusting the amplitude and phase of at least one of the audio signal and / or the carrier signal to steer the audio beam to a desired direction. The apparatus also includes means for generating an ultrasound beam in the desired direction driven by the modulated carrier signal. The apparatus may include means for weighting the audio and / or carrier signal by a zeroth order Bessel function to synthesize a Bessel distribution source. A corresponding method for steering a directional audio beam is also disclosed. A harmonic generator may be used to generate harmonics of low frequencies in the audio signal. The harmonics may provide (upon demodulation) a psycho-acoustic impression of improved perception of low frequencies. Further, a modulated ultrasonic signal or an unmodulated audio signal may be band-passed into two or more different band-limited signals. The band-limited signals may be amplified and transmitted by ultrasonic transducers having mechanical resonance frequencies substantially equal to a characteristic frequency of the band-limited signals. Ultrasonic processing of the audio signal may include square root methods without generating large numbers of harmonics.

Semiconductor layer structure

A III-nitride compound device which has a layer of AlInN (7) having a non-zero In content, for example acting as a current blocking layer, is described. The layer of AlInN (7) has at least aperture defined therein. The layer of AlInN (7) is grown with a small lattice-mismatch with an underlying layer, for example an underlying GaN layer, thus preventing added crystal strain in the device. By using optimised growth conditions the resistivity of the AlInN is made higher than 102 ohm·cm thus preventing current flow when used as a current blocking layer in a multilayer semiconductor device with layers having smaller resistivity. As a consequence, when the AlInN layer has an opening and is placed in a laser diode device, the resistance of the device is lower resulting in a device with better performance.

Semiconductor light emitting device

A semiconductor light emitting device including an active layer interposed between an n-type cladding layer and a p-type cladding layer employs an AlxGa1-xN (AlGaN) layer having an Al composition ratio x satisfying 0.01≦x<0.06 as the n-type cladding layer. As the Al composition ratio x decreases below 0.06, the AlGaN layer increases in refractive index. Thus, the near field pattern (NFP) in the vertical direction can spread out, and full width at half maximum of FFP in the vertical direction can be minimized. Further, since a lattice mismatch with a GaN substrate is reduced with decreasing Al composition ratio, the AlGaN layer can be formed thick without causing cracks or dislocation, and the spreading of light into the GaN substrate can be minimized.
