Lightweight, low cost solar energy collector

InactiveUS20110088686A1Increase stiffnessWithout using additional costly structureSolar heating energySolar heat devicesFiberEngineering
A lightweight solar concentrator of the reflecting parabolic or trough type is realized via a thin reflecting film, an inflatable structural housing and tensioned fibers. The reflector element itself is a thin, flexible, specularly-reflecting sheet or film. The film is maintained in the parabolic trough shape by means of a plurality of tensioned fibers arranged to be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the parabola. Fiber ends are terminated in two spaced anchorplates, each containing a plurality of holes, which lie on a desired parabolic contour. In a preferred embodiment, these fibers are arrayed in pairs with one fiber contacting the front side of the reflecting film and the other contacting the back side of the reflecting film. The reflective surface is thereby slidably captured between arrays of fibers, which control the shape, and position of the reflective film. Gas pressure in the inflatable housing generates fiber tension to achieve a truer parabolic shape. A plurality of bridges and or retention clips may be employed in certain embodiments to maintain the position of the reflective surface relative to the fibers.

Exercise device with varied gait movements

An exercise device for performing a variety of movement patterns is provided, having an upper link pivotally mounted to a lower leg link and a foot support on a distal end of the lower leg link. A first transfer system is movably coupled to a frame and including a first transfer member coupled to the first upper leg link and a second transfer member coupled to the second upper leg link, thereby enabling substantially reciprocating motion of the first leg link relative to the second leg link. A second transfer system is also provided and may be movably coupled to the frame and including a pair of third transfer members coupled to each of a pair of fourth transfer members by way of each of a pair of transfer couplings, each movably mounted to the frame. The fourth transfer members may be coupled to the first lower leg link and the second lower leg link, whereby movement of the first lower leg link causes movement of the second lower leg link irrespective of movement of the upper leg links thereby providing a stable platform for the user and also enabling an infinite number of gait patters by the user.

Belt tensioning system

A system for improving the efficiency of a belt-driven system is provided. The system is particularly adapted for retrofitting tensioners onto existing belt-driven machines or to incorporate a tensioner into an the existing design of a belt-driven machine with limited changes to the specifications of the existing design. The system includes a motor driving a belt that drives a pulley. The pulley drives a shaft or other element of the system. A tensioner is provided for tensioning the belt to impede slippage between the belt and the pulley. The tensioner is connected to the motor and a frame of the system via a mounting bracket that includes a first leg and a second leg having a plurality of mounting holes adapted to cooperate with mounts on the motor and a connector of the tensioner. In one embodiment, the mounting holes of the second leg are laterally offset from one or more mounting holes of the first leg. Additionally, in one embodiment, the mounting bracket is configured so that the mounting holes in the first leg are positioned to form an array of rows and columns, and the mounting holes in the second leg are positioned to form a separate array of rows and columns.

Method for intermittently applying thin-film coatings

A method for intermittently applying thin-film coatings is realized, by which a coating of extremely thin film reduced to 20 μm or less in thickness is deposited intermittently with high productivity and at the same time, the trailing coating edge of the thin film is formed in a highly accurate shape having good linearity. This is achieved as follows. A band-shaped substrate (1) traveling in one direction is kept looped over a stationary reference-roller (4) and a movable actuation roller (7), and is brought into contact with an application roller (19) which carries a coating agent (18) on its circumferential surface and rotates in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the substrate (1). The actuation roller (7) is moved to come into or out of contact with the substrate (1) with a predetermined timing. A tension roller (8) is also controllably moved to come into or out of contact with the substrate (1), following the actuation roller (7) coming into or out of contact with the substrate (1), so that the tension applied to the substrate (1) is kept constant all the time.

Ratchet unit

The present invention relates to a ratcheting unit enabling for securing cargo particularly for tightness in order to secure a load of cargo quickly and safely. Typically these ratcheting straps feature a first end with one length of strap secured to the first end via a bolt, and the other length of strap is fed through a ratcheting cylinder. The ratchet allows the user to hook the straps on the distal ends to a secure anchor point, i.e. the side of a trailer. The straps are pulled taught, the loose strap is fed through the ratcheting cylinder and the ratchet handle is used to tighten the slack in the strap, bringing the strap to a higher tension than what one could easily achieve without the aid of a ratchet to hold the tension and provide leverage for taking in further slack.

Meshless foil stencil frame

A meshless foil stencil frame removes all the components of mesh mounted frames and associated issues and mechanically attaches the foil to an aluminum frame by way of pre-cut tabs. Tension is applied by either pulling on all four sides of the frame and then placing a spacer at each corner to maintain the displacement of each frame member or locking the corners and placing a displacement insert between frame and foil. This displacement in turn applies pressure on a foil which is held firm at each of the four edges and therefore creates tension on the foil.

An arrangement of fenders nested together for compact storage, the fenders including two or more cylindrical bodies having a cavity accessed through the fender top, the fenders being similar shape but graduated in size such that the cavity of a larger fender tensionally receives the next smaller sized fender, the outer diameter of the smaller fender equal to the inner diameter of the larger fender cavity. A fender has a rigid inner core surrounded by a compressible shell made of foam or similar material. The inner core has attachment points for a rope or line. The smallest nesting fender in the set has a cavity diameter sized to fit a commercially-available, off-the-shelf fender. The fenders may be separated and deployed at individual locations on a vessel, or kept together and deployed as a single fender capable of absorbing a greater impact than any of the fenders individually would absorb.
