Surgical instrument incorporating an articulation mechanism having rotation about the longitudinal axis

A surgical instrument particularly suited to endoscopic articulates an end effector by including an end effector having a geared articulation mechanism that converts rotational motion from a handle portion. A hollow articulation drive tube transfers the rotation motion in some versions to a spear gear, bevel gear or snaggle tooth gear articulation mechanism. Alternatively, one or more threaded drive rod offset from a longitudinal axis engages a worm gear or flex-neck articulation mechanism.

Techniques for remotely delivering shaped display presentations such as advertisements to computing platforms over information communications networks

A high impact desktop or palmtop product placement or “shaper” display presentation technique overcomes disadvantages of previous ad display techniques while providing high consumer interest and increased flexibility for content creators. An advertisement is run in front of or behind a web browser view so it appears with the user's desktop as background, and in a non-rectangular shape that looks nothing like a traditional pop-up or pop-under ad. A “shaper” ad can, for example, have any desired shape such as for example an exact replica of a product being advertised e.g., a cell phone, a Sports Utility Vehicle climbing a mountain, a plasma television set, etc.

Method and apparatus for tuning content of information presented to an audience

A method and apparatus are disclosed for tuning the content of information presented to an audience, for example, on a large display screen or an information kiosk. A disclosed content selection and driving system (i) extracts relevant characteristics about the audience, (ii) analyzes the characteristics, (iii) modifies the presented content based on the analysis, and (iv) records relevant statistics for reporting. An audio / visual analyzer derives audience characteristics and other information on the public reaction to the presented advertising or information by analyzing audio or video information, or both. The derived characteristics are utilized to tune the content of the presented advertising or information to the characteristics of the current audience. A reporting module receives real-time audience statistics and an indication of the selected content. Reports can be generated for the content provider, such as advertisers, that indicate the exposure of various population segments to the presented content and the reaction of the audience to the presented content.

Method and a system for putting a space vehicle into orbit, using thrusters of high specific impulse

The method serves to place a space vehicle, such as a satellite, on a target orbit such as the orbit adapted to normal operation of the space vehicle and starting from an elliptical initial orbit that is significantly different from, and in particular more eccentric than the target orbit. The space vehicle is caused to describe a spiral trajectory made up of a plurality of intermediate orbits while a set of high specific impulse thrusters mounted on the space vehicle are fired continuously and without interruption, thereby causing the spiral trajectory to vary so that on each successive revolution, at least during a first stage of the maneuver, perigee altitude increases, apogee altitude varies in a desired direction, and any difference in inclination between the intermediate orbit and the target orbit is decreased, after which, at least during a second stage of the maneuver, changes in perigee altitude and in apogee altitude are controlled individually in predetermined constant directions, while any difference in inclination between the intermediate orbit and the target orbit continues to be reduced until the apogee altitude, the perigee altitude, and the orbital inclination of an intermediate orbit of the space vehicle have substantially the values of the target orbit.

Navigation System for Providing Personalized Directions

The disclosure includes a system and method for providing personalized recommendations. The system includes a navigation application comprising a route engine, an intersection extractor, a historical analyzer and a user interface module. The processing unit receives data and transmits the data to the corresponding component in the navigation application. The route engine determines a new route from a first location to a second location for a user, the new route comprising directions for each portion of the new route. The intersection extractor identifies intersections that occur on the new route. The historical analyzer determines historical routes traveled by the user, compares the new route to the historical route to identify which portions and intersections in the new route are familiar to the user and removes directions for the portions of the new route that are familiar. The user interface module provides the new route to the user.
