Broadband over power lines (BPL) is a method of power line communication (PLC) that allows relatively high-speed digital data transmission over the public electric power distribution wiring. BPL uses higher frequencies, a wider frequency range and different technologies from other forms of power-line communications to provide high-rate communication over longer distances. BPL uses frequencies which are part of the radio spectrum allocated to over-the-air communication services; therefore the prevention of interference to, and from, these services is a very important factor in designing BPL systems.

Broadband coupler technique for electrical connection to power lines

Disclosed is a power line broadband communication system having broadband coupler devices capable of direct electrical connection to an energized power line. The coupler includes a conductive portion movable by an adjustable member from a non-conducting retracted position spaced apart from the power transmission line to a forward conducting position in electrical contact with the power line. An insulated arm supports the coupler on the power line. A base on the coupler is engageable with a remotely activated tool in order to accomplish the electrical connection in a safe and secure manner. Broadband data signals are sent to and from customer premises along the shared energized power lines. New coupler connections to the energized power lines allow the additional broadband customers and / or repeaters to join the communication system. Also couplers may provide connections to control electronics, routers, wireless transceivers, and may allow the broadband signals to bypass transformers on the power lines. The invention helps to minimize risk by allowing an installer to be remotely spaced from the energized power line while making the electrical coupling contact with the energized power line.

The system and method of station area topology identification based on power line broadband carrier (HPLC) relate to a distribution transformer station area network topology identification technology,in particular to a method of distribution network topology automatic identification system using power line broadband carrier (HPLC) as a communication means, which is used for automatic identification of station area topology. The system consists of a signal transmitting device and a signal receiving terminal. The signal transmitting device includes a power line broadband carrier (HPLC) communication module installed at the root of the transformer. The signal receiving terminal has built-in trap to block the 50Hz signal, and has a unique ID code for the whole network through the specific frequency signal, and is installed at the inlet or outlet terminal of the branch box and the meter box. The signal transmitting device first obtains the ID codes of all signal receiving terminals, transmits signals, controls the states of the signal receiving terminals, detects the current direction, automatically identifies the parent nodes of each branch box and the meter box according to the current direction, and thus obtains the topology diagram of the whole station area. In the implementation process of the invention, the terminal device does not need to be configured with parameters, the HPLC is used as a communication means, no extra wiring is needed, the communication advantage of the HPLC is fully utilized, and the identification process is realized quickly and accurately.

An inductive coupler provides an interface between a power line and a communication device which communicates via the power line. The power line operates at a potential between four and 140 kilovolts while accommodating a current having a frequency between 45 and 65 hertz, and the communication device operates substantially at ground potential. The inductive coupler includes a split ferrite core having material selected to provide a substantially flat frequency response between one and 50 megahertz. The coupler also includes a clamping mechanism allowing the inductive coupler to clamp around the power line or around a utility line connected to the power line. Further, the coupler includes at least one lead for communicatively connecting the inductive coupler to the communication device. The inductive coupler forms an air gap when the inductive coupler is clamped. If the coupler is insulated, the insulation is also used for the air gap.
