A programmable processing engine and a method of operating the same is described, the processing engine including a customized processor, a flexible processor and a data store commonly sharable between the two processors. The customized processor normally executes a sequence of a plurality of pre-customized routines, usually for which it has been optimized. To provide some flexibility for design changes and optimizations, a controller for monitoring the customized processor during execution of routines is provided to select one of a set of pre-customized processing interruption points and for switching context from the customized processor to the flexible processor at the interruption point. The customized processor can then be switched off and the flexible processor carries out a modified routine. By using sharable a data store, the context switch can be chosen at a time when all relevant data is in the sharable data store. This means that the flexible processor can pick up the modified processing cleanly. After the modified processing the flexible processor writes back new data into the data store and the customized processor can continue processing either where it left off or may skip a certain number of cycles as instructed by the flexible processor, before beginning processing of the new data.

Potable multimedia terminal which is small and consumes low power, can process a large quantity of multimedia data such as video and audio data. Portable multimedia data input/output processor can be made smaller by using a pen as an input device and can also process a large quantity of multimedia data at a high speed by adopting a PCI bus as a local bus of a system. To retrieve, compress, and decompress multimedia data, main components of this portable multimedia data input/output processor are comprised of audio codec for compressing and decompressing audio data, video codec controller for compressing and decompressing video data, and multimedia processor for transmitting audio data to wireless communication controller and video data to video codec controller and to graphic processor. The method for retrieving multimedia data includes steps of receiving data, de-interleaving received data into audio, video, and graphic data, decompressing the data, and outputting the data to output device. The method for compressing data includes steps of inputting video data to video codec controller, compressing video and audio data at video codec controller and audio codec, interleaving the compressed data, and transmitting them to a remote system. The steps to decompress data are in reverse to the steps to compress data.

System and method for monitoring a physiological condition

The invention describes a system and method for allowing an individual to view an educational program remotely. In the preferred embodiment, the invention is used as a healthcare education system. The system comprises a file server which is connected to a database holding the educational programs. A remote interface connected to the file server allows an administrator to assign educational programs to an individual. The remote interface also includes a memory card writer which records the individual's identification code and the address of the file server on a memory card. The individual is given the memory card to take home. When the individual places the memory card in the memory card reader of a multimedia processor, the processor uses the file server address to automatically connect to the file server. The file server receives the individual's identification code from the processor, retrieves the corresponding educational program from the database, and sends the program to the processor to be displayed. After the individual has watched the educational program, completion data in the form of the date and time the program was watched, or the individual's response, is sent from the multimedia processor to the file server. The completion data can then be viewed by the administrator on a report screen.

The stored decrypted received secure key may be encrypted utilizing the on-chip key stored within the single mobile multimedia processor chip.
