A system and method for a wireless device to efficiently access affiliated addresses across linked topical communities, such as an Internet WebRing, through a wireless gateway. The invention includes a processing unit running on a wireless device controlled by an affiliated address control program. The processing unit includes a processing unit with a subject processor, a program store for holding an apparatus control program, a network address sub-processor, an address array referrer, an input mechanism, a display device for selecting retrieved affiliated addresses, and a high speed memory for holding site address selectors and associated content buffer. The wireless device communicates with a network via conventional wireless communication means which provides a path for updating the content buffer and array referrer, as well as transference of other types of sensory data. Means for predicting search failures is also integrated into the apparatus control program of the processing unit. Data received from the wireless gateway is statistically preprocessed then supplied to a processor called a network address sub-processor. The system then incorporates sorted affiliated addresses into the system on the wireless device to make possible a real-time detector system for a wireless device accessing content through a wireless gateway. The system may be offered as a service benefit for wireless device subscription or as a per occurrence chargeable item for a wireless subscriber. Data throughput over lossy communication links

In a heterogeneous data network including both wired and wireless / lossy links, a transport protocol method implemented at the wireless host is fully compatible with existing wired networks and wireless gateways, and requires no modification to transport protocols at existing wired hosts. The wireless host calculates a temperament parameter [100] characterizing the error-proneness of the data connection and uses this parameter to determine whether error-induced losses or congestion-losses dominate the data connection [110]. If congestion-losses dominate the data connection, then the host uses a standard technique for acknowledging data packets [130]. If, on the other hand, error-induced losses dominate the connection, the host uses a modified technique for acknowledging data packets [120]. According to this modified technique, the wireless host sends a plurality of non-duplicate acknowledgements of a single packet whenever a packet is received after an out-of-order packet is received. By acknowledging distinct fragments of the packet, rather than identical (i.e., duplicate) acknowledgments of the packet, the acknowledgments have the effect of accelerating recovery of maximal window size at the wired host and increasing data throughput.

Vehicle telemetric system

A vehicle telemetric system comprises vehicle interface units (VIUs), wireless gateways, and a central host. The VIU in a vehicle collects data over the OBD-II bus and stores the data in the form of Data Point Records (DPRs) in an on-board flash memory. When the VIU is within wireless range of a gateway, it establishes a WiFi (802.11b) connection with the gateway, and submits stored DPRs to the gateway, to be stored in permanent storage at the gateway. The gateways communicate with the central host over a wide area network (WAN). When a gateway has gathered new DPRs from a VIU, it submits these to the central host. Databases in the gateways as well as in the central host are maintained and synchronized to track received DPRs by sequence number and originating VIU. In conjunction with specific protocols, all DPRs are thus collected reliably, even though communication with a vehicle may be intermittent. Efficient use of WiFi bandwidth is made by avoiding the unnecessary collection of duplicate DPRs.
