Route planning system for mobile telecommunications

A route planning system for use in mobile telecommunications is disclosed. A user of a mobile station such as a wireless telephone, PDA, pager or computer, initiates a route planning service request and provides a destination telephone number. A switching center responsively initiates an asynchronous position request of a mobile positioning system, which identifies and stores the mobile station position. The switching center connects the mobile station to a route planning application server. The route planning application server obtains the mobile station position by querying the mobile positioning system. The route planning application server further obtains the destination telephone number and queries a location system to determine the destination position corresponding to the destination telephone number. The route planning application server in turn generates a route plan for travel from the mobile station position to the destination position and conveys the route plan to the user by any suitable means.

Catheter system for implanting embryos

Described is a catheter system for implanting embryos into a woman's uterus. The catheter system utilizes a protective catheter sleeve for introducing a catheter into the uterus without mucus contamination of an inner catheter. Once the sleeve containing the inner catheter is introduced into the uterus, the protected inner catheter, carrying the embryos, is pushed through a swivelable distal end cap on the sleeve to a desired implanting location. The distal end of the inner catheter has a protective cap and a side opening for embryo release. Also, stiffness and indicia features of the outer sleeve and inner catheter assist in the physician's handling of the catheter system and in ensuring a desired uterus location for implanting.

Method for developing a unified quality assessment and providing an automated fault diagnostic tool for turbine machine systems and the like

A computer implemented process is provided for assessing and characterizing the degree of success or failure of an operational event of a machine system such as a fluid compressor machine or turbine machine or the like on a continuous numerical scale. The computer implemented process develops and tracks machine unit signatures, machine site signatures and machine fleet signatures to evaluate various operational events and provide fault detection. At least some sensor data acquired from the machine system during an operational event is transformed to correct or at least reduce variabilities in the data caused by ambient conditions and fuel quality. The transformed data is then analyzed using statistical methods to determine how closely the operational event conforms to an expected normal behavior and the information is used to develop a single comprehensive quality assessment of the event. By saving, tracking and updating operational event assessments over time, machine / component degradation may be recognized at any early stage and corrective action may be initiated in advance of a catastrophic failure.

Method for controlling a drive train of a motor vehicle

A method of controlling a drivetrain of a vehicle in which the drivetrain comprises a motor, a transmission with starting gears and a clutch located between the motor and transmission, a manual shift lever, and a control unit, for controlling the transmission and clutch, that communicates with a speed sensor, and an accelerator pedal and shift lever actuation sensors. When starting off from coasting, a starting gear is determined in a manner that can be influenced by the driver via actuating the manual shift lever. To assist the driver, it is checked whether the transmission is in neutral and the clutch is engaged, if the vehicle speed is within a specified speed range. If so, the clutch is disengaged, another gear is engaged, and starting is initiated in combination with situation-dependent clutch engagement and carried out as a function of accelerator pedal actuation, provided the shift lever has not been actuated.

Nanostructures formed of branched nanowhiskers and methods of producing the same

A method of forming a nanostructure having the form of a tree, comprises a first stage and a second stage. The first stage includes providing one or more catalytic particles on a substrate surface, and growing a first nanowhisker via each catalytic particle. The second stage includes providing, on the periphery of each first nanowhisker, one or more second catalytic particles, and growing, from each second catalytic particle, a second nanowhisker extending transversely from the periphery of the respective first nanowhisker. Further stages may be included to grow one or more further nanowhiskers extending from the nanowhisker(s) of the preceding stage. Heterostructures may be created within the nanowhiskers. Such nanostructures may form the components of a solar cell array or a light emitting flat panel, where the nanowhiskers are formed of a photosensitive material. A neural network may be formed by positioning the first nanowhiskers close together so that adjacent trees contact one another through nanowhiskers grown in a subsequent stage, and heterojunctions within the nanowhiskers create tunnel barriers to current flow.
