In assessing the capability of an IP based network to support toll telephony service, objective measurements of Speech Quality are taken. A module is used with Voice over Packet equipment that allows performance of voice quality measurements in real-time without using any external test equipment. A reference signal that includes a marker and a voice test signal is sent through the network from one Voice over Packet equipment containing or connected to the module to another. The received marker is compared to the reference marker to identify the onset time of the received voice test signal. The received and reference voice test signals are processed to measure the quality of the network. This may be implemented using the processing power and memory resources present in Voice over Packet equipment giving the network administrator an enhanced test capability at each node of the network. Voice quality measurements may be generated in a transparent way for the callers in real-time under severely degraded conditions of the network.

Techniques are disclosed for sound source localization based on joint learning and evaluation of ITD and ILD representations that are measured in a complementary, correlation-based way using binaural time-frequency spectrums. According to one embodiment, from these measurements and learned representatives, which may, for example, be created by combinations of measurements from signals belonging to the same class, i.e., the same azimuthal location, probability distributions over frequency and class are computed. These probability distributions can be combined over cue and frequency using information-theoretic approaches to get a robust classification of the location and additionally a confidence measure for the quality of the classification result.

Method and apparatus for session reconstruction and accounting involving VoIP calls

A method, computer program product, and apparatus for reconstructing sessions on a network are described. The method allows for monitoring of quality of service at an application level as well as for understanding application specific events. This allows the method to be used to generate service detail records for usage based on application type for use in billing. It also allows the qualitative and quantitative analysis of quality of service based on application specific parameters. For example, for voice over IP calls, application events like adding participants and removing participants can be detected and billed accordingly. Also, the quality of service can be measured. For example, the actual latency can be compared to a predetermined latency amount set by a provider for voice over IP calls. Additionally, service detail records can be generated based on application specific events instead of generic flows, so usage billing can be performed based on factors such as a price per minute per leg, etc, with application specific events generated each time a leg is added or dropped.

Method for transmitting data over lossy packet-based communication networks

The invention is concerned with the transmission of streaming scalable data, particularly video data, through lossy communication channels, for applications in which limited retransmission is possible, and the associated reception and decoding of transmitted data. The PET (Priority Encoding Transmission) framework is used and the invention exploits both unequal error protection and limited retransmission. Each element in the scalable representation of each frame can be transmitted in one or both of two transmission slots, depending on the availability of the data received from the first of the two transmission slots. An optimization algorithm determines the level of protection which should be assigned to each element in each slot, subject to transmission bandwidth constraints. To balance the protection assigned to elements which are being transmitted for the first time with those which are being retransmitted, the proposed algorithm in preferred embodiments formulates a collection of hypotheses concerning its own behavior in future transmission slots.

Sensor components deployed in a container and acting as resistors or capacitors are used to determine liquid level independent of liquid quality. Displacement current can also be considered as the conduction current to accurately measure liquid quality and level. As the level of liquid increases, the displacement current and conduction current increases, which in turn causes a large change in output for a small change in liquid level. The change in displacement and conduction current values due to contamination of the liquid can be taken in to account with the help of auxiliary electrodes. The contaminated liquid level can be measured very accurately by current flowing through primary electrodes along with the use of auxiliary electrodes for auxiliary measurement, resulting in enhanced sensor system sensitivity and accuracy. System liquid level accuracy is independent of liquid quality and measures liquid quality accurately with resistance, displacement current, conduction current and capacitive measurement.

Methods are described that are used to identify quality problems in a wireless communication network as experienced by a user-session of a mobile computing device, and quantify the quality of network transmission associated with the user-session.
