Method for high-performance delivery of web content

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for increasing the performance of world-wide-web traffic over the Internet. A distributed network of specialized nodes of two types is dispersed around the Internet. A web client's requests are directed to a node of the first type chosen to be close to the client, and the client communicates with this node using a standard protocol such as HTTP. This first node receives the request, and communicates the request to a node of the second type chosen to be close to the request's ultimate destination (e.g., a web server capable of generating a response to the request.) The first node communicates the request to the second node using a different, specialized, protocol that has been designed for improved performance and specifically to reduce traffic volume and to reduce latency. The second node receives communication from the first node using this specialized protocol, converts it back to a standard protocol such as HTTP, and forwards the request to the destination computer or server. Responses from the destination to the client take the corresponding reverse route, and also are carried over a specialized protocol between the two nodes. In addition, these nodes can employ other techniques such as web caches that avoid or improve some communication steps. Thus, specialized, proprietary, or complex protocols and techniques can be quickly deployed to enhance web performance without requiring significant changes to the clients or servers.

System for tissue cavity closure

Surgical systems for less invasive access to and isolation of an atrial appendage are provided. A suturing grasper compresses soft tissue structures and deploys one or more sutures through complimentary pledget(s) carried by the grasper. The pledgets are reinforced, containing support members that define the profile of the stitch and distribute stresses applied by the stitch, once tightened, over a length of tissue. This hardware may be applicable to other surgical and catheter based applications as well including: compressing soft tissue structures lung resections and volume reductions; gastric procedures associated with reduction in volume, aneurysm repair, vessel ligation, or other procedure involving isolation of, resection of, and reduction of anatomic structures.

Peripheral buses for integrated circuit

The present invention provides an integrated circuit comprising a system bus to which a processor is connectable, and first and second peripheral buses to which peripheral units used by said processor are connected, the first peripheral bus operating at a higher clock speed than the second peripheral bus. Further, the integrated circuit comprises bridge logic for providing an interface between the system bus and the peripheral buses to enable signals to be passed between the system bus and the peripheral buses, the bridge logic comprising clock resynchronisation logic for synchronising the system bus and the peripheral buses. Through the provision of first and second peripheral buses operating at different clock speeds, the integrated circuit of the present invention provides a great deal of flexibility for reducing the power consumption of the integrated circuit as compared with a similar integrated circuit having only one peripheral bus. Since the power consumption of each peripheral bus is proportional to the clock frequency and capacitance, significant power consumption savings can be realised by ensuring that each peripheral unit is connected to the slowest peripheral bus appropriate for that peripheral unit.

Compilation of application code in a data processing apparatus

The present invention relates to a data processing apparatus and method for compiling application code. The data processing apparatus comprises a processor, and a compiler for compiling application code to generate instructions for execution by the processor. Furthermore, a non-invasive trace unit is coupled to the processor for generating, from input signals received from the processor, trace signals indicative of the instructions being executed by the processor. The compiler is then arranged to control the compilation of the application code dependent on the trace signals. The non-invasive nature of the trace unit enables it to generate trace signals that can be used to produce profiling information for use by the compiler without altering the behaviour of the code being executed by the processor, and accordingly provides a significantly improved technique for obtaining profiling information for use in feedback driven optimisation compilation techniques.

Switchable permanent magnetic device

A switchable magnetic device includes a first magnet and a second magnet, both of which are essentially cylindrical. Magnets are housed in a housing made from pole pieces. Pole pieces are ferromagnetic. Lower magnet is fixedly mounted in the housing while upper magnet can rotate within the housing. Upper magnet is formed with notches or grooves along its vertical side walls. These notches or grooves receive downwardly depending arms of bar. Bar is received inside a groove formed on boss. Boss is connected to a short bar that, in turn, is fixedly connected to a handle or lever. By this means, rotation of handle or lever causes rotation of second magnet. When the upper magnet is positioned such that its north pole substantially overlies the south pole of lower magnet and the south pole of upper magnet substantially overlies the north pole of lower magnet, the first and second magnets act as an internal active magnetic shunt and as a result the external magnetic field strength from the device is quite low. Rotating the upper magnet 180° about its axis of rotation brings the magnets into alignment such that the respective north and south poles of the upper magnet substantially overlie respective north and south poles of lower magnet. In this alignment, the external magnet field from the device is quite strong and the device can be affixed to surfaces or objects.

System and method of organizing nodes within a tree structure

A system and method are provided for organizing and managing a tree structure having a plurality of nodes representing physical entities, the tree structure defining a number of node locations, each node location being reached via a predetermined path from a root node of the tree structure. The method comprises the steps of associating first and second keys with each node to be included in the tree structure, the value of at least the first key being unique for each node, and then arranging the nodes within the tree structure by sorting the nodes with respect to both the first key and the second key, the sorting with respect to the first key being such that each node may be positioned within the tree structure at any node location along the path from the root node to the node location specified by the first key. By this approach, a search can be performed for a node within the tree structure based on specified criteria for both the first and second keys.

Device facilitating efficient transfer of digital content from media capture device

A method facilitating the transfer of information from a media or data capture device to a larger device while providing valuable feedback about the transfer is described. A transfer device including a simple user interface that can be easily implemented on a media or data capture device provides feedback about the transfer operation, enabling the user to take action when necessary. For example, the user is advised if the transfer is complete or, alternatively, that the transfer has failed and needs to redone. Feedback is provided by visual signals and may also be accompanied by audible signals. All necessary transfer functionality is included on the media capture device, thereby avoiding the requirement for dedicated software on a host (or pipeline) device, such as a cellular phone. This expands the number of pipeline devices that can be utilized with particular media capture devices. As long as there is a correct interface between the data capture device and the pipeline device, all the necessary transfer functionality can be included in the data capture device.

Paging in a Cellular Communication System

A cellular communication system comprises a user equipment (101) which is arranged to transmit control channel messages to a network (103) of the communication system. When a message is transmitted, the user equipment (101) enters an active monitoring mode for a time interval after which it returns to the power-down mode. The user equipment (101) monitors a paging channel when in the active monitoring mode but not in all paging cycles when in the power-down mode. The network (103) is arranged to transmit paging messages in response to a detection of the control channel message from the user equipment (101). The invention may allow a much longer power-down interval thereby reducing power consumption and increasing battery life. The approach may be particularly suitable for machine-to-machine communications.

System and method for phase-locked loop (PLL) for high-speed memory interface (HSMI)

A phase-locked loop (PLL) to provide clock generation for high-speed memory interface is presented as the innovate PLL (IPLL). The IPLL architecture is able to tolerate external long loop delay without deteriorating jitter performance. The IPLL comprises in part a common mode feedback circuit with a current mode approach, so as to minimize the effects of mismatch in charge-pump circuit, for instance. The voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) of the IPLL is designed using a mutually interpolating technique generating a 50% duty clock output, beneficial to high-speed double data rate applications. The IPLL further comprises loop filter voltages that are directly connected to each VCO cell of the IPLL. Conventional voltage-to-current (V-I) converter between loop filter and VCO is hence not required. A tight distribution of VCO gain curves is therefore obtained for the present invention across process corners and varied temperatures.
