Method and apparatus for testing cells and batteries embedded in series/parallel systems

A “three-point” measurement technique effectively removes system effects to determine impedance, admittance, resistance, or conductance of an individual cell, battery, or interconnecting conductor embedded in a series or series-parallel electrochemical battery or fuel cell system. Three electrical contact points are defined. Two of these points bound the subject element. The third point is separated from the other two by a conducting path that may include one or more cells or batteries. By measuring dynamic parameters between alternate pairs of contact points, three dynamic parameter measurements are acquired. A mathematical computation combines the measurements and determines the dynamic parameter of a subject element as if it were alone—thus effectively “de-embedding” the subject element from the remainder of the system. A “four-point” extension of this technique permits measuring a dynamic parameter of a cell / battery disposed in a multiple-unit string of parallel-connected cells / batteries.

Method of measuring a pressure of a pressurized fluid fed through a diaphragm pump and accumulated in a vessel, and miniature pump system effecting the measurement

A method and system for determination of a pressure of the pressurized fluid with the use of a diaphragm pump responsible for accumulating the pressurized fluid in the vessel. The pump has a pump cavity and a diaphragm with a piezoelectric element which is actuated by an application of a voltage to displace the diaphragm for pumping a fluid into the vessel. The method comprises the steps of: (a) deactivating the diaphragm by removal of the voltage to the piezoelectric element so as to stop pumping the fluid and accumulating the pressurized fluid into the vessel; (b) introducing the pressurized fluid only from the vessel back into the pump cavity so as to cause a displacement of the diaphragm by the pressurized fluid; (c) deriving an electrical signal indicative of the displacement of the diaphragm; and (d) translating the electrical signal into a corresponding pressure value indicative of the pressure of the pressurized fluid in the vessel.

Method and system for reducing effects of undesired signals in an infrared imaging system

Effects of undesired infrared light are reduced in an imaging system using an infrared light source. The desired infrared light source is activated and a first set of imaging data is captured during a first image capture interval. The desired infrared light source is then deactivated, and a second set of image data is captured during a second image capture interval. A composite set of image data is then generated by subtracting from first values in the first set of image data corresponding second values in the second set of image data. The composite set of image data thus includes a set of imaging where data all infrared signals are collected, including both signals resulting from the IR source and other IR signals, from which is subtracted imaging in which no signals result from the IR course, leaving image data including signals resulting only from the IR source.

Laser processing of a locally heated target material

A method and laser system effect rapid removal of material from a workpiece by applying heating energy in the form of a light beam to a target location on the workpiece to elevate its temperature while maintaining its dimensional stability. When the target portion of the workpiece is heated, a laser beam is directed for incidence on the heated target location. The laser beam preferably has a processing laser output that is appropriate to effect removal of the target material from the workpiece. The combined incidence of the processing laser output and the heating energy on the target location enables the processing laser output to remove a portion of the target material at a material removal rate that is higher than the material removal rate achievable when the target material is not heated.

System performance prediction

Overall system performance improvements resulting from improvements to individual system components may be predicted by analyzing the effects of artificial performance degradations inserted into the individual components. Measuring and analyzing a negative overall system effect caused by negative changes to an individual component may predict a positive overall system performance improvement resulting from an improvement to the individual component of similar magnitude to the inserted negative changes. System performance prediction may be used to analyze and predict system performance changes related to various computing resources, such as execution time (speed), memory usage, network bandwidth, file I / O, and / or disk storage space, among others. Additionally, by comparing predicted system performance improvements resulting from potential improvements to various components of a software system, the individual components may be ranked according to the amount of improvement required to realize the predicted system performance improvements.

Optical system effects for computer graphics

Users define the aperture shape and brightness characteristics of a virtual lens system to generate optical system effects in computer graphics images. An image sample point is associated with a aperture point within the aperture. The location of the aperture point may be based on the shape of the aperture.
