The preferred embodiment of the present invention contemplates the utilization of a heat pipe having first and second ends and a length, the first and second ends communicating with first and second thermally conductive plates, respectively, the first thermally conductive plate configured to communicate with an exterior portion of the body of the patient and to provide localized thermal treatment, the second thermally conductive plate placed at an area removed from the area to be treated, and configured to accept, for example, an ice pack (or other thermal material or apparatus) to affect a change in the temperature of the second thermally conductive plate, cooling the second end of the heat pipe and allowing the heat pipe to cool the first thermally conductive plate, thereby providing localized cooling of the area to which it is applied. An alternative embodiment of the invention contemplates a heat source in lieu of the ice pack, wherein the second thermally conductive plate would function as an evaporator, thereby providing a reverse cycle in the heat pipe, for heating the area to be treated via the first thermally conductive plate. The present invention may be utilized for localized thermal application on various parts of the body, and several examples are illustrated, including an exemplary system to treat plantar fasciitis.

The implants may be delivered percutaneously, thoracically or surgically and are particularly well suited for implantation into the myocardium of the heart. The implants are delivered to the ischemic tissue location in the first configuration, implanted then expanded to the second configuration. The expanded implants maintain a stress on the surrounding tissue, irritating and slightly injuring the tissue to provoke an injury response that results in angiogenesis. The flow of blood from the surrounding tissue into the implant and pooling of the blood in and around the implant leads to thrombosis and fibrin growth. The invention relates to a fitness apparatus for improving the health of the human body by a combination of physical exercise and alternating pressure applied to the body. The fitness device comprises a housing forming a pressure chamber. The housing is adapted to contain a training pressure. The training pressure is different from the ambient pressure on the outside of the housing. The housing comprises a sealable opening adapted to sealingly receive said person's waist. Within the pressure chamber, an exercise device is arranged having a seat for taking off the weight off the person's legs, a pair of movable actuation surfaces where exercise work can be introduced from the person's legs into the exercise device, and a resistance means connected to the actuation surfaces and adapted to absorb the exercise work. The actuation surfaces and the seat may be arranged to be movably adjustable relative to each other and to the opening. Further, the housing may be vertically divided into at least a first and a second part which may be slidingly separated for easier access.

Devices for extracting bone marrow from a bone of a patient are disclosed. The device includes a housing defined in part by a cannula and a hollow needle disposed within the cannula. The hollow needle is movable axially relative to the cannula and extendable therefrom. The hollow needle is configured to aspirate bone marrow within a bone. A depth adjustment mechanism coupled to the hollow needle and the cannula is used to adjust the depth of the hollow needle relative to the cannula to control the distance of the needle within the bone. The device is attachable to an extraction device to extract bone marrow from the patient through the hollow needle. Methods of using these devices and methods of extracting bone marrow are also included.
