A valve prosthesis which is especially useful in the case of aortic stenosis and capable of resisting the powerful recoil force and to stand the forceful balloon inflation performed to deploy the valve and to embed it in the aortic annulus, comprises a collapsible valvular structure and an expandable frame on which said valvular structure is mounted. The valvular structure is composed of physiologically compatible valvular tissue that is sufficiently supple and resistant to allow the valvular structure to be deformed from a closed state to an opened state. The valvular tissue forms a continuous surface and is provided with strut members that create stiffened zones which induce the valvular structure to follow a patterned movement in its expansion to its opened state and in its turning back to its closed state.

A medical balloon composed of a micro-composite material which provides for radial expansion of a balloon to a predetermined extent, but which has minimal longitudinal growing during balloon inflation. The micro-composite material includes a fibril component, a matrix component, and optionally, a compatibilizer. The fibril component may preferably be liquid crystal polymer fibers randomly scattered through out the balloon material. The liquid crystal polymers are created by extrusion at high speed. An alternative fibril component may be a PET fibers which are uniformly spaced about the balloon material and extend through out the length of the balloon material tube.

The present invention is a guide wire imaging device for vascular or non-vascular imaging utilizing optic acoustical methods, which device has a profile of less than 1 mm in diameter. The ultrasound imaging device of the invention comprises a single mode optical fiber with at least one Bragg grating, and a piezoelectric or piezo-ceramic jacket, which device may achieve omnidirectional (360°) imaging. The imaging guide wire of the invention can function as a guide wire for vascular interventions, can enable real time imaging during balloon inflation, and stent deployment, thus will provide clinical information that is not available when catheter-based imaging systems are used. The device of the invention may enable shortened total procedure times, including the fluoroscopy time, will also reduce radiation exposure to the patient and to the operator.

A system and method delivers and collects a wash medium into a lumen of the urinary tract system. Isolated saline delivery washes cells from a urethra that are collected for cancer diagnosis. BCG is delivered for local chemotherapy. The isolated delivery and collection is from a region bound by a distal occlusion and proximal occlusion. Inflatable balloons provide the occlusion and or a penis clamp may be used. The two balloons may telescope relative to each other. A balloon inflation lumen may collapse a valve membrane to occlude distal flow of infused fluid to only proximal of the balloon.

A tunable coating formulation is described for a drug delivery balloon comprising a therapeutic agent, an excipient and a plasticizer. The tunable coating includes a first therapeutic agent and a first excipient, and can have a second therapeutic agent and a second excipient. The first and second therapeutic agents have different dissolution rates during balloon inflation and therefore provide a coating that is tunable. The plasticizer in the formulation has a weigh ratio of excipient to plasticizer below 1:0.1.

A balloon catheter for dilation of stenotic tissue within a tubular member of the body such as a blood vessel provides fluid flow such as blood flow through the balloon while it is being inflated and after it has been inflated. For valvuloplasty applications or for predilitation prior to a TAVI procedure the balloon is placed across the stenotic aortic valve leaflets and inflated to push the leaflets aside to create a greater blood flow area or allow improved subsequent passage of the large TAVI catheter across the stenotic aortic valve leaflets. As the balloon is inflated in diameter, it is required to reduce in length; this length reduction causes a braided inner tubing to also reduce in length. The braided inner tube is thereby required it to increase in diameter during the balloon inflation and create a suitably large blood flow path through the inner tubing. The continuous perfusion through the inner tubing of the balloon allows greater balloon inflation times, improved valvular dilation, and obviates the need for rapid pacing during the valvuloplasty procedure.

One embodiment provides a method implemented by a powered inflation device to prepare a balloon catheter for use during a medical procedure. In this embodiment, the method includes drawing an amount of medical fluid from a fluid reservoir into the inflation device during a first motorized operation of the inflation device, removing an amount of air from the balloon catheter during a second motorized operation of the inflation device, and injecting the amount of medical fluid from the inflation device into the balloon catheter during a third motorized operation of the inflation device to inflate a balloon located at a distal end of the balloon catheter The powered inflation device may be a stand-alone device in one embodiment. In one embodiment, the powered inflation device is coupled to an angiographic injector system. When it is coupled to an angiographic injector system, the balloon inflation device and the injector system may be controlled by a common control panel, or console, in one embodiment.

A radiopaque balloon with a composite wall having a radiopaque adhesive affixing inner and outer layers of the balloon. The radiopaque adhesive provides a radiographic image of the balloon wall with or without the use of a radiopaque contrast media to inflate the balloon. A radiographically fainter image is provided as the balloon is inflated with well-defined edges of a balloon image, and the total radiopacity of the balloon does not change as the balloon is inflated. The present invention tackles the challenging anatomic characteristics of the coronary artery disease in the bifurcation point and the origin of side-branch. The invention has a specifically designed angioplasty balloon catheter, particularly the balloon shape and profile, to be used in the diseased vessels at these difficult anatomic locations. In stent implanting into a coronary artery, a balloon catheter application is an inseparable requirement. A stent is a passive device that cannot be deployed in a diseased or stenosed artery without a pre-stent, with-stent and/or post-stent balloon dilatation. In majority (more than 95%) of available coronary stents, a stent is deployed by balloon expandable mode, meaning that the stent is delivered and expanded inside a vessel lumen by expanding a delivery balloon. This is done by crimping a stent over a folded balloon for delivery into a coronary artery. When expanded by balloon inflation, a stent is expanded and shaped passively by the inflated balloon shape and profile. The balloon catheter is designed to do angioplasty in the bifurcation and side-branch anatomy of coronary arteries, while minimizing the side effect. This specially designed balloon catheter is not only for balloon angioplasty dilatation of the bifurcation and side-branch anatomy, but is also for delivering and deploying specially designed bifurcation or side-branch stents into these difficult anatomic locations, as a stent delivery system.

A catheter comprises an outer shaft and an inner shaft defining a balloon inflation lumen for transport of an inflation fluid therethrough. The expandable balloon has a proximal waist portion and a distal waist portion with a body portion there between. The balloon is engaged to a distal region of the outer shaft and defines an exterior and an interior where the interior is in fluid communication with the balloon inflation lumen. The inner shaft has an inner shaft wall defining a guidewire lumen for passage of a guidewire. A distal portion of the inner shaft is expandable from an unexpanded state to an expanded state such that in the expanded state the guidewire lumen has a greater cross-sectional area than in the unexpanded state.

A catheter assembly may be provided with a catheter body and an inflatable balloon. The catheter body has a proximal end, a distal end and a balloon inflation lumen. The inflatable balloon is attachable to the distal end of the catheter body. The balloon has an inner surface that at least partially defines an interior volume. The balloon is configured such that the interior volume can be in fluid communication with the inflation lumen of the catheter body to inflate the balloon. The balloon also has a proximal surface and a distal surface. The balloon is provided with a channel that extends through the balloon. The channel is configured to provide fluid communication between the proximal surface of the balloon and the distal surface of the balloon. An elastically distensible folding member is disclosed. The folding member can be formed with a wall that is substantially shaped as a tube when the folding member is in a relaxed (i.e. unstressed) state. The tubular shaped folding member defines a tube axis and can have an axially aligned slit that extends through the wall. The folding member can be used to cover an incising element that is attached to the balloon and positioned in the lumen of the tubular folding member. During balloon inflation, the folding member can be deformed to expose the tip of the incising element to allow for a tissue incision.
