A rotorcraft and method for providing controlled flight which provides flight in all six degrees of freedom of pitch, roll, yaw, up/down, forward/rear, and left/right. The rotorcraft includes a fuselage with a pair of counter-rotating rotor blade assemblies each having a plurality of radially-extending airfoil shaped blades about a vertically disposed central axis. A rotor drive system mounted to the fuselage includes a motor or engine for rotationally driving the rotor blade assemblies. A rotor blade control system monitors the rotational location of each blade relative to the fuselage and allows a pilot to control respective vertical and horizontal thrust components of the blades corresponding to lift versus drag characteristics of the airfoils during rotation about the fuselage. This is done by changing the pitch angles of the blades and/or by utilizing respective flaps pivotally mounted to the blades to change the effective pitch angle of the blades.

A VTOL aircraft (or other vehicle such as a sea vehicle) includes a pair of elongated ducts on opposite sides of the vehicle body, and a plurality of powered propellers (or other propulsion units such as jet engines) mounted within and enclosed by each of the elongated ducts, such as to produce an upward lift force to the vehicle. A method for controlling a flying projectile which rotates during flight, comprising: determining an angle of rotation of an inertial mass spinning about an axis during flight; and controlling at least one actuator for altering at least a portion of an aerodynamic structure, selectively in dependence on the determined angle of rotation and a control input, to control aerodynamic forces during flight. An aerodynamic surface may rotate and interact with surrounding air during flight, to produce aerodynamic forces. A sensor determines an angular rotation of the spin during flight. A control system, responsive to the sensor, produces a control signal in dependence on the determined angular rotation. An actuator selectively alters an aerodynamic characteristic of the aerodynamic surface in response to the control signal.

The invention discloses an aircraft generating a larger lift from its interior. The fluid channel inside the aircraft communicates with the engine and the ports on the upper surface of the outer shell. With the powerful suction of the engine, the fluid on the upper surface of the outer shell is quickly sucked into the fluid channel via respective ports under conditions of long path, large area, high speed and low air pressure, which results in large lift from the interior of the aircraft. In the course of generating the lift, the fluid resistances of the fluid wall and the fluid hole are sucked into the fluid channel through the ports at the front and the surrounding area of the aircraft, then high-speed fluid is emitted from the rear port. This approach contributes greatly to the transformation of the existing aircraft. The unified big wing significantly improves the lift, the speed and the carrying capacity of the existing aircraft with lowered energy consumption.

A Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aerial vehicle (1, 46), e.g. a rotorcraft with long range and high cruising speed capability. The aerial vehicle (1, 46) has a torus-type fuselage (2) with radial inside a duct (5) and at least one main rotor (13, 26). A pair of lateral wings (40) are attached opposed to each other outside the fuselage (2) and at least one engine (18) drives said at least one main rotor (13, 26) and at least two propulsion means (24) fitted to each of said wings (40). An electric and hybrid Vertical-Take Off and Landing (“VTOL”) aircraft is disclosed comprising a plurality of small Electric Ducted Fans (“EDFs”) of various sizes and orientations. The thrust of each fixed EDF is individually controlled by modulation of motor power by one or more onboard microcomputers connected to a plurality of onboard laser distance measuring sensors, at least three onboard three-axis accelerometers and at least one GPS thereby allowing extremely precise and safe VTOL operation. The aircraft may be employed to allow robotic and passenger vehicles to transition extremely quickly between normal linear flight and VTOL and tb operate in extreme and gusty conditions.

There have been past proposals for air vehicles employing the Coanda effect. In these proposals, a jet of fluid, usually air, is made to flow radially outwardly over 5 a dome-shaped canopy to create lift. A cross-section through the canopy is curved to follow a segment of a circle or it may have a radius of curvature that increases in the direction of flow. In the invention, the radius (r) of the canopy curve decreases towards the downstream direction (x) in a way that is related to the decrease in the width of 10 the jet as it flows over the surface. This means that the radius of curvature decreases (instead of increasing) towards the downstream direction with the rate of decrease being progressively less rapid towards the downstream direction.

An unbalanced gyroscopic apparatus is disclosed for producing unidirectional thrust without having to interact with an external gas, liquid, or solid mass. The technique is based on the controlled transitions of an unbalanced spinning mass between two stable unbalanced weight states resulting in a net unidirectional thrust at the spin axis. In one existing embodiment, an apparatus with an attached body can be propelled up a planar incline "sliding" uphill against terrestrial gravity. In another embodiment, multiple pairs of synchronized and mirror-image, unbalanced gyroscopic assemblies are combined as one apparatus and attached to a body with the potential to propel it in any direction, including defeating gravity completely without interaction with gas, liquid, or solid mass or without use of propellants.

A helicopter includes a rotor with short blades and tip thrusters. The blades extend from an annular fuel tank that rotates with the blades. Centrifugal force propels fuel from the interior compartment of the annular tank, through conduits extending through the blades from root to tip, to the tip thrusters. Valves (e.g., solenoid valves and/or a flyweight governor) regulate fuel flow to achieve and maintain a determined steady rotational speed. A fuselage covered by a canopy is mounted atop a bearing on the annular fuel tank. The pitch of each blade may be adjusted collectively and cyclically using a swash ring and hydraulic linear actuators.
