396 results about "Homeostasis" patented technology

In biology, homeostasis is the state of steady internal physical and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. This dynamic state of equilibrium is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits (homeostatic range). Other variables include the pH of extracellular fluid, the concentrations of sodium, potassium and calcium ions, as well as that of the blood sugar level, and these need to be regulated despite changes in the environment, diet, or level of activity. Each of these variables is controlled by one or more regulators or homeostatic mechanisms, which together maintain life.

Once-a-day, oral, controlled-release, oxycodone dosage forms

Oxycodone formulations are provided which produce substantially flat in vivo steady state plasma profiles. Tolerance levels associated with such profiles and tolerance levels associated with biphasic profiles are shown not to be statistically different. The substantially flat in vivo steady state plasma profiles are produced by dosage forms having substantially zero order in vitro release profiles. Such release profiles produce low single dose in vivo Cmax levels which can reduce the probability of adverse side effects.

Method and system of breathing therapy for reducing sympathetic predominance with consequent positive modification of hypertension

InactiveUS20060047202A1Avoid influenceReduction in “ tenseness ”Gymnastic exercisingCatheterDiseaseNervous system
The invention specifies a method and system for leading a person suffering from “sympathetic predominance”, a specific symptom of which is “hypertension”, to breathe according to a certain pattern for the express purpose of positively altering the condition of sympathetic predominance (over activation), having the effect of bringing the autonomic nervous system into the state of balance, with consequent reductions in “tenseness”, blood pressure, muscular tightness, and emotional strain, as well as the alleviation of the myriad of subtle neuro-physiological consequences resulting from sympathetic predominance potentially including headaches, anxiety, sleep disorders, allergies, and other maladies that have yet to be attributed to this condition, thus leading to a general improvement in health, well being, and homeostasis. It accomplishes this by systematically reducing the breathing frequency with consequent increases in breathing depth, the ultimate goal being the realization and ongoing maintenance of 1 complete breathing cycle in 11.76 seconds or 5 complete breathing cycles in 58.8 seconds, the result being improved health, well being, and homeostasis.

3-D petri-dish for the culture and studies of cells

A three-dimensional (3-D) culture “Petri-dish” for research in regenerative medicine, biotechnology and clinical translation is described. This 3-D perfusion culture dish is to advance in vitro culture tools from static 2-D to dynamic 3-D perfusion culture. Interwoven hollow fiber capillary membranes divide the “Petri-dish” culture space into a controllable 3-D pattern of different compartments, serving the functions of the organ's larger vasculature. These physically active scaffolds, which can be suitable for cell adhesion or cell aggregate immobilization, offer a supply of cells with high-performance mass exchange including gas supply and under perfusion conditions. In contrast to static and discontinuous medium supply, a dynamic culture can be achieved with continuous or alternating medium supply and integral oxygenation. They provide a more physiologic supply in the cell macro environment, including homeostasis of oxygen, pH, nutrition, soluble factors, and gradients of metabolites for the cells. Also, medium perfusion can be achieved. Consequently the invention was made for cultures at tissue density, especially stem cells and support cells, which strive to create their own stem cell niche.

Prolonged administration of NMDA antagonist drug and safener drug to create improved stable neural homeostasis

InactiveUS20050222270A1Stable and lasting improved neural homeostasisBiocideOrganic active ingredientsDiseaseNervous system
An NMDA antagonist (such as ketamine) is administered with a safener (such as clonidine) in patients suffering from neurologic disorders other than pain. The ketamine is adminsitered at a dosage that causes slurred speech, for a span of several days. This treatment enables a patient's nervous system to return to a healthy “set point”, also called an improved stable neural homeostasis, in a manner similar to a broken bone healing itself if protected from jostling and reinjury by a cast. In at least some patients, this treatment can ease problems such as addictions to illegal or pain-killing drugs, nicotine, or alcohol, compulsive or criminal behavioral problems, severe depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, phobias, etc. It may also provide some relief in some patients for problems such as chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivities, allergies, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes.

Methods and apparatus for optimal remote ischemic preconditioning (ORIP) for preventing ischemia-reperfusion injuries to organs

Ischemia-reperfusion injury commonly results from any surgical procedure requiring stopping of blood supply to an organ followed by reperfusion such as in heart bypass, angioplasty or organ transplant. The invention discloses a method to harness the innate power of repetitive transient ischemia in protecting organs against imminent ischemia-reperfusion, or any patho-physiological insults. This method of optimal remote ischemic preconditioning (ORIP) comprises of utilizing a pair of programmable pneumatic cuffs that inflate / deflate alternately occluding blood circulation to each of the limbs for pre-defined time intervals. The apparatus delivers maximal ORIP dose in shortest possible time either as an EMS procedure during patient transportation to hospital, as elective pre-surgery treatment, or in critical care for preventing multiple-organ-dysfunction-syndrome. ORIP can be self-administered and remotely monitored by clinician especially in chronic patients for homeostasis of malfunctioning target organs. ORIP may also be deployed as adjunct in angioplasty, gene / stem cell heart repair therapies.

Method and apparatus for detecting and regulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by forming a homeostatic loop employing a half-antibody biosensor

ActiveUS20100260679A1Maximize detection surface areaPeptide librariesBiological material analysisAbnormal tissue growthIn vivo
A biosensor for detection of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) hybridization uses an array of parallel capacitors to detect electrochemical binding of circulating VEGF to immobilized anti-VEGF monoclonal half-antibodies (a-VEGF mhAb). Binding of a-VEGF mhAb modulates the threshold voltage of a circuit, changing the impedance of the circuit. An electrode coated with a p-Si substrate enhances the affinity between the VEGF molecules. A fluid cell delivers VEGF samples onto the active surface of the chip. An array of parallel capacitors arranged in an interdigitated pattern detects the VEGF in the fluid. The detector provides an accurately measured and quantifiable rate of change of the VEGF molecules in vivo, providing real time feedback which is used to measure response of the tumor to delivered chemotherapeutic agents and biological response modifiers (BRMs) for the purpose of determining tumor burden and efficacy of the chemotherapy as part of a homeostatic loop for chemotherapy.
