Using a call stack hash to record the state of a process

InactiveUS20060253837A1Minimal impact performanceRaise privacy concernError detection/correctionSpecific program execution arrangementsCall stackRoot cause
In embodiments of the invention, selected aspects of a process' call stacks are hashed, and the hash is used to capture the execution state of the process in a concise form and with minimal impact on the performance of the process and with no modification to the process code. The hash allows vendors and developers to classify failures in order to associate them with their known root causes to support rapid customer feedback and to maximize efficiency of correction. Further, the hash provides a metric usable to prioritize diagnosis of failures. In an embodiment of the invention, the identities of modules on the call stack are hashed in combination with some but not all offset information to minimize the affect of patches and minor changes to the code, and improve the ability to discriminate different execution paths.

Method and apparatus for removal of asynchronous events in complex application performance analysis

InactiveUS20050183075A1Minimizing affectionRelative affect in the resulting tree data structure is minimizedSoftware engineeringSpecific program execution arrangementsTree (data structure)Theoretical computer science
A method and apparatus for identifying a minimum call tree data structure from a plurality of call tree data structures are provided. With the apparatus and method, call tree data structures are generated for two or more executions of a build of a computer program. The apparatus and method perform a “tree-minimization” operation in which the two or more call trees generated during runs of the computer program are walked and only those nodes that are present in each of the tree data structures are maintained in a minimized tree data structure. In addition, the minimum values for these common nodes are maintained in the minimized tree data structure. In this way, asynchronous events are removed from the minimum tree data structure and analysis may focus on those areas of the computer program that are consistent between runs of the computer program.

System and method for information handling system adaptive variable bus idle timer

Power management of an information handling system PCI Express bus dynamically adjusts the inactivity time at the bus that is determined before initiation of a low power state by analyzing the transitions between low power and operating states over time. Dwell times of the bus in the low power state are compared with an inactivity goal to determine if the inactivity time should be adjusted up, such as when the bus enters the low power state too often, or should be adjusted down, such as when the bus enters the low power state too infrequently. In one embodiment, the dwell time is the time from entry into a low power state until initiation of the transition to an operating state and the inactivity goal is the time required for the bus to enter and exit the low power state.

Method and apparatus for averaging out variations in run-to-run path data of a computer program

InactiveUS20050183070A1Relative affect in the resulting tree data structure is minimizedMinimizing affectionNuclear monitoringDigital computer detailsTheoretical computer scienceTree (data structure)
A method and apparatus for averaging out variations from run to run of a computer program are provided. With the apparatus and method, call trees are generated for two or more executions of a build of a computer program. The apparatus and method perform a “tree-addition” operation in which the two or more call trees generated during runs of the computer program are added to one another to thereby accumulate statistics for each call in the call trees. These statistics may then be divided by the number of runs whose tree data structures are being accumulated. In this way, an average of the tree data structures is generated. In addition, any portions of the tree data structure that are due to asynchronous events are averaged out so that their relative affect in the resulting tree data structure is minimized.

Method and apparatus for automatic detection of build regressions

InactiveUS20050183067A1Relative affect in the resulting tree data structure is minimizedMinimizing affectionSoftware testing/debuggingSpecific program execution arrangementsTheoretical computer scienceCall tree
A method and apparatus for automatically performing regression processing on trace data are provided. With the apparatus and method, call tree data structures are generated for two or more executions of two or more builds of a computer program. The apparatus and method perform a “tree-minimization” operation on each set of call tree data structures for each of the builds to generate minimized call tree data structures for each build of the computer program. The minimized call tree data structures are then subtracted from one another to generate a subtracted minimized call tree data structure. From this subtracted minimized call tree data structure, the portions of the computer program that are different from build to build and which appreciably and consistently affect the difference in execution of the computer program from build to build may be identified. Thus, the analyst's attention is directed to these areas of the computer program code which may be optimized in order to obtain better execution of the computer program.

Archery laser arrow

InactiveUS20050278964A1Eliminate the problemEliminates the parallax angleSurveyor's staffsMovable markersParallaxVisibility
The laser targeting system of the present invention eliminates the problem of parallax between the arrow's path and the archer's line of sight. An embodiment is a laser integrated into an arrow such that the beam is projected down the axis of the arrow. Another embodiment is an arrow rest with an integrated laser, which can have an angular adjustment. By having the laser extend the axis of the arrow to the target, the laser spot produced on the target accurately represents where the arrow will hit once released, and eliminates the parallax angle between the archer's line of sight and the arrow's path. The present invention also provides a means for using a single laser beam to project a diffractive pattern onto a target, such as several spots or crosshairs. For advanced visibility of the laser spot, an optical filter or infrared vision optical sensors can be used.

Messaging mechanism employing mailboxes for inter processor communications

A shared resources service processor facilitates messaging between line processors and provides a single point of contact for a user interfacing with line processor(s), for example in a storage system interface. Shared memory is divided into “mailboxes” that are used to communicate between the line processors and the service processor. The service processor issues a system management interrupt to any or all of the line processors. This interrupt indicates to the line processor(s) that it should go out to the shared memory and read its respective mailbox. In operation, the service processor can deliver a message, i.e. command, to a line processor's mailbox, for example to tell a line processor to go off-line or on-line. The service processor will write the command into the mailbox and then assert the system management interrupt on the appropriate line processor that it wants to read the mailbox. The line processor receiving the interrupt will take the interrupt vector, read the mailbox, interpret the command and deliver the appropriate response to the mailbox. The line processor(s) conserves backplane bandwidth by selectively consolidating selected tasks onto the service processor to reduce the number of accesses to the backplane.
