Methods and apparatus for utilizing a downhole deployment valve (DDV) to isolate a pressure in a portion of a bore are disclosed. Any combination of fail safe features may be used with or incorporated into the DDV such as redundant valve members, an upward opening flapper valve or a metering flapper below a sealing valve. In one aspect, a barrier or diverter located in the bore above a valve member of the DDV permits passage through the bore when the valve member is open and actuates when the valve member is closed. Once actuated, the barrier or diverter either stops or diverts any dropped objects prior to the dropped object reaching and potentially damaging the valve member. In another aspect, the tool string tripped in above the DDV includes an acceleration actuated brake that anchors the tool string to a surrounding tubular if the tool string is dropped.

A circulating sub apparatus comprising: a substantially tubular outer body member having a throughbore formed therein; a substantially tubular inner body member; wherein both the inner and outer bodies normally have holes formed therein; and a displacement mechanism for producing movement of the inner body member relative to the outer body member between: an open configuration, in which the hole(s) on the outer body member are open such that fluid is passable between a throughbore and the outside of the circulating sub apparatus via the one or more holes; and, an obturated configuration, in which the hole(s) on the outer body member are obturated; wherein the inner body member comprises a seat member adapted to catch a dropped object, and wherein the seat member is adapted to permit at least a proportion of fluid to flow past the dropped object when it is seated thereon. Normally the seat member is located upstream of the hole(s) of the outer body member in both the open and obturated configurations. In exemplary form the apparatus uses a drop object which can erode over time. When the object is dropped it causes the displacement mechanism to move to a different position and so switch between open and obturated positions. In exemplary form a mechanism, such as a cammed sleeve, is provided to allow the displacement mechanism to be moved back and forth between open and closed positions. Embodiments benefit in that they can be moved back and forth between such positions rather limited to a one-off change using a dropped ball.

An inflatable chamber is defined by an inner layer and an outer layer of the shroud connected at their peripheries. A drawstring assembly encircles the periphery of the shroud and may be secured in a constricted state or released to an extended state. A blower adapted to inflate the inflatable chamber is capable of maintaining the shroud in an active inflated state in order to shield the covered object from being impacted by falling objects such as hail.
