Date Feb. 13, 1997The invention relates to the detection of target nucleic acids or nucleic acid units in a sample, by obtaining a SER(R)S spectrum for a SER(R)S-active complex containing, or derived directly from, the target. The complex includes at least a SER(R)S-active label, and optionally a target binding species containing a nucleic acid or nucleic acid unit. In this detection method, the concentration of the target present in the SER(R)S-active complex, or of the nucleic acid or unit contained in the target binding species in the SER(R)S-active complex, is no higher than 10-10 moles per liter. Additionally or alternatively, one or more of the following features may be used with the method: i) the introduction of a polyamine; ii) modification of the target, and/or of the nucleic acid or nucleic acid unit contained in the target binding species, in a manner that promotes or facilitates its chemi-sorption onto a SER(R)S-active surface; iii) inclusion of a chemi-sorptive functional group in the SER(R)S-active label. The invention also provides SER(R)S-active complexes for use in such a method, a kit for use in carrying out the method or preparing the complexes and a method for sequencing a nucleic acid which comprises the use of the detection method to detect at least one target nucleotide or sequence of nucleotides within the acid.

A light-weight composite material with enhanced structural characteristics includes, in one embodiment, a compositionally modulated nanolaminate coating electrically deposited into an open, accessible void structure of a porous substrate. As a result of including a nanolaminate within the void structure, the composite can include a greater amount of nanolaminate material per unit volume than can be achieved by depositing a nanolaminate material solely on a two-dimensional surface. In addition, the nanolaminate material as well as other material electrodeposited to form the composite is compositionally modulated so that discontinuities between layers are minimized and potentially eliminated. The light-weight but structurally enhanced composite material can be used in a number of different applications including, but not limited to, ballistic applications (e.g., armor panels or tank panels), automotive protection applications (e.g., car door panels, racing shells) and sporting equipment applications (e.g., golf club shafts and tennis racket frames).

There is provided methods, devices and computer program products for distributing a plurality of virtual IEEE 802.11 wireless networks through a heterogeneous infrastructure. A terminal sends a service provider request to an access point. The service provider request is forwarded to a master server which searches for available service providers. Acknowledgement information relating to available service providers capable of operatively connecting the terminal to the data communications network via the access point is sent by the master server to the access point. The access point forwards this information to the terminal. The access point may thus distribute a plurality of virtual IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, their number only constrained by the number of distinct identifiable service providers and the memory of the master server. A data connection may be established in the absence of a direct service agreement between the service provider of the terminal and the operator of the access point.

A system and method for locating, tracking, and monitoring resource in large-scale facilities is disclosed herein. The system is based on a sensor network and is efficient, scalable, and requires only short-range communication. The system allows for sensor-to-sensor communication as well as the traditional sensor-to-anchor communication to effectively eliminate long-range communications. In order to perform resource localization and tracking, the present invention pairs each resource with an inexpensive, low-powered sensor possessing minimal resources or anchors and those resources communicate with their nearby resources or anchors until a wireless, linked network of resources and anchors is formed.

A plurality of slots is provided at a stator core. A cable component is formed by bundling a plurality of conducting wires and connectors are mounted on both ends. The cable component is inserted into corresponding slot so as to cross over the corresponding plurality of slots and then a coil is formed by connecting both ends of the cable component.

Generating a high definition projected illumination pattern from a substantially lower resolution digital projector array involves: selectively illuminating a connected set of pixels to produce a pixellated, high contrast edge feature, and positioning an anisotropically blurring optical element (ABOE) between a light source of the projector array and the projection. The ABOE applies an anisotropic blur pattern to pixels of the at least one connected set, to locally preferentially blur the pixel more (and preferably substantially only) in a direction of equally or more strongly illuminated pixels, and not in directions of less illuminated pixels. Preferably a contour of the connected set has no beginning or end within a periphery of the illumination plane, and has bounded curvature, permitting simple ABOEs to be used. Several images each having several or many edges can be produced using a same ABOE. The ABOE may alleviate interpixel gap effects for non-edge pixels too.

The vertical semiconductor chips or devices have all of advantages of flip chip technique and without its disadvantages. The present invention discloses methods of mass production of the vertical semiconductor chips or devices comprising GaN, GabInP, and GaInNP based LEDs with higher crystal quality, higher throughput, higher yield, and lower cost. The methods comprise the following process steps in the order presented: growing a first-type cladding layer, disposing a reflector/Ohmic layer, disposing a second intermediate layer, disposing an electrically conductive supporting plate, removing the original substrate and the first-type cladding layer exposed, growing an epitaxial layer comprising an active layer and a second-type cladding layer, disposing a second-electrode, and dicing into individual dies.

A method for triggering an optical protection event in an optical layer of a network comprising the following steps: i) monitoring the optical performance of an optical signal transmitted within the optical layer of the network; ii) provisioning optical protection in the event the monitored optical performance falls below a first threshold level; and iii) triggering an optical protection event, in the event the monitored optical performance falls further to below a second threshold level. The monitoring step is performed within the optical layer of the network by using a proxy to determine an optical performance characteristic which corresponds to the transmission quality of electronic signals extracted from said optical layer signal.

A power supply device for a computer system with a plurality of servers includes a power supply, a switch circuit, and a control unit. Each of the plurality of servers are electrically connected to the power supply via the switch circuit. The control unit is electrically connected to the power supply, the switch circuit, and each of the plurality of servers. Each of the plurality of servers is configured to send a selection signal to the control unit. Upon receiving the selection signal from one or more of the plurality of servers, the control unit turns on the power supply and controls the switch circuit to electrically connect the power supply with the one or more of the plurality of servers sending the selection signal.

Compositions comprising a coupled interpolymer such as polybutadiene which may be suitable for HIPS and ABS have been discovered. The coupled interpolymer composition comprises an interpolymer comprising one or more monomeric units derived from a diene wherein the coupled interpolymer composition is characterized by: (A) a halide content of less than about 30 ppm based on the total weight of the coupled interpolymer; (B) a molecular weight distribution of from about 1.6 to about 2.4; and (C) a vinyl content of from about 5 to about 15 weight percent based on the total weight of the coupled interpolymer.

The invention relates to a method for acquiring the optimized parameters of a machining operation in the application of COM methodology, comprising: providing a plurality of readings indicative of the specific cutting energy (Kc) during an equal plurality of tests carried out with an imposed value, that is different from one test to another by at least one variable representative of the cutting operations, one of said variables being the cutting speed (Vc) and another being the advance rate (f); next determining a range of values of each of said variables including the optimal value for said variable obtained by means of processing the results for carrying out the machining operation; characterized in that a specific program (10a) of the digital control (7) is used for obtaining a continuous variation of the values of the variable during a single machining pass for a test, and in that the data read are formed during said single pass by the different values of the torque current (Iq) of the motor of the machine pin from which the corresponding values of (Kc) are derived by means of computational processing.

The disclosure describes a method of extraction for optimal recovery of rare earth elements (REE). This includes the optimization of a liquid-liquid extraction technique for economic extraction of REE from chemically complex brines. Through the use of a model, operating conditions are altered to increase separation efficiency. The technique achieves >98% recovery of all rare earth elements in one fraction, while using small volumes of sample and reagents. The method of the present invention recovers REE from previously unexploited waste streams, without need for development of new process equipment and while keeping a small footprint because of the volumes involved.

A digital video camcorder capable of recording and playing golfing actions comprises a lens set, an optical sensor, an image processing module, an image input module, an image display module, a mode select module, a microprocessor, a memory unit and a display unit. After a function of the mode select module is selected, a first image sensed by the optical sensor via the lens set and processed by the image processing module or a second image inputted by the image input module can be recorded into the memory unit. The microprocessor and the image display module can simultaneously display two images already stored in the memory unit on the display unit in a slow-motion, freeze-frame or split-frame way. A touch pen can then be used to directly draw illustration lines on the display unit.

A power supply device for a computer system with a plurality of servers includes a control unit, a main board, and a connection unit. The control unit includes a plurality of switches. The main board includes a power supply and a strobe circuit. When any one or more of the switches is turned on, each turned-on switch generates a control signal. The control signal causes the power supply to be turned on, and simultaneously causes the strobe circuit to generate a selection signal corresponding to the turned-on switch. The connection unit electrically connects the power supply to a server corresponding to the turned-on switch in response to reception of the selection signal from the strobe circuit by the connection unit.

A ceramo-ceramic dental prosthesis is made from a patient's negative mandibular impression, including at least one working cavity having an inner surface matching the lower surface of the prosthesis to be produced and left at least by one tooth primed by the dental surgeon to be prosthetized. The method of making the prosthesis includes a step of providing a single-unit wax model used for producing by precision casting a single-unit metal model on which is mounted, by the dental technician, a ceramic, the single-unit model having previously been coated with a stripping product to avoid the adherence of the ceramic on the metal single-unit model after the ceramic is cured on the single-unit metal model.

Provided herein is a method for producing methyl pentenone (MPO) in high yield in a continuous mode in a fixed bed reactor having a plurality of sidewall injecting ports by reacting excess methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) with acetaldehyde in presence of a cation exchange resin catalyst, wherein the acetaldehyde is injected from the plurality of sidewall injecting ports of the reactor. The method is also effective in reducing the complete consumption of the catalyst during the course of the reaction.

A method of infrared heat-processing of nuts (e.g., almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts and mixtures thereof) in order to reduce the microorganism level thereof is provided wherein the nuts are sequentially moisturized by application of water and then subjected to infrared radiation, preferably through a series of treatment cycles. Nut treatment apparatus (10) includes opposed banks of infrared heaters (38,40), with plural water application stations (48,50,52) along the length of the heater banks (38,40).

A manufacture method for fullerence/PEDOT:PSS mixed solution and a manufacture method for compound transparent conductive film having fullerence/PEDOT:PSS are provided in the present invention: making fullerence/PEDOT:PSS mixed solution to manufacture a transparent conductive film; sources of applicable materials are broad and prices thereof are cheap; the fullerence/PEDOT:PSS mixed solution can be further utilized to manufacture a compound transparent conductive film having fullerence/PEDOT:PSS on substrates or a variety of devices; the present invention discloses a manufacture method for a compound transparent conductive film having fullerence/PEDOT:PSS, and when manufacturing the compound transparent conductive film having fullerence/PEDOT:PSS via wet coating process which is with low cost and high efficiency comparing with manufacture of ITO film, and furthermore expensive PVD equipment can be waived, production cost can be reduced, manufacturing method can be simplified at the same time, production time is shorter and economic efficiency can be increased; the compound transparent conductive film having fullerence/PEDOT:PSS manufacturing in the present invention has high conductivity and high light transmittance to replace ITO films in the market.

A system and method for tracking the movement of a recording device to form a composite image is provided. The system has a a user device with a sensor array capturing motion data and velocity vector data of the recording device when the recording device is in motion, an attachment member for coupling the user device to the motion capturing device, and a server with program modules. The program modules described are a calibration module for calibrating a position of the user device relative to a position of a lens of the recording device, a recorder module for receiving the motion data and velocity vector data from the sensor array; and a conversion module for combining the position of the user device relative to the lens of the recording device, and the motion data and velocity vector data and transforming the data into a file that is usable by a compositing suite, a three-dimensional application, or both.
