Distributed traffic controller for network data

A distributed gateway for controlling computer network data traffic dynamically reconfigures traffic assignments among multiple gateway machines for increased network availability. If one of the distributed gateway machines becomes unavailable, traffic assignments are moved among the multiple machines such that network availability is substantially unchanged. The machines of the distributed gateway form a cluster and communicate with each other using a Group Membership protocol word such that automatic, dynamic traffic assignment reconfiguration occurs in response to machines being added and deleted from the cluster, with no loss in functionality for the gateway overall, in a process that is transparent to network users, thereby providing a distributed gateway functionality that is scalable. Operation of the distributed gateway remains consistent as machines are added and deleted from the cluster. A scalable, distributed, highly available, load balancing network gateway is thereby provided, having multiple machines that function as a front server layer between the network and a back-end server layer having multiple machines functioning as Web file servers, FTP servers, or other application servers. The front layer machines comprise a server cluster that performs fail-over and dynamic load balancing for both server layers.

Read Ahead Tiered Local and Cloud Storage System and Method Thereof

A high tier storage area stores a stub file and a lower tier cloud storage area stores the file corresponding to the stub file. When a client apparatus requests segments of the file from the high tier storage area, reference is made to the stub file to determine a predicted non-sequential pattern of requests to the segments by the client apparatus. The high tier storage area follows the predicted non-sequential pattern of requests to retrieve the segments of the file from the cloud prior to the client apparatus actually requesting the segments. As such, the file may be efficiently provided to the client apparatus while also efficiently storing the file on the lower tier cloud storage area.

Modeling system for graphic user interface

A modeling system for universal specification of user interfaces. The system provides a means for defining user interfaces, including highly complex and dynamic user interfaces, in a manner that is independent of any implementation context. The modeling system leads from a user-friendly visual representation of the user interface, through progressively detailed specifications of structural and behavioral aspects of the user interface parts, until a rigorous definition of the user interface in all its contexts of use is achieved. Using the information captured in the model, tools that automatically generate the fully working user interface code can be built.

Apparatus and method for processing service interactions

An interactive voice and data response system that directs input to a voice, text, and web-capable software-based router, which is able to intelligently respond to the input by drawing on a combination of human agents, advanced speech recognition and expert systems, connected to the router via a TCP / IP network. The digitized input is broken down into components so that the customer interaction is managed as a series of small tasks rather than one ongoing conversation. The router manages the interactions and keeps pace with a real-time conversation. The system utilizes both speech recognition and human intelligence for purposes of interpreting customer utterance or customer text. The system may use more than one human agent, or both human agents and speech recognition software, to interpret simultaneously the same component for error-checking and interpretation accuracy.

Method and apparatus for undoing a data migration in a computer system

A method and apparatus for managing a migration of a data set from at least one first storage location to at least one second storage location, wherein read requests to the data set from at least one application program executing on a computer system initially are serviced from the at least one first storage location. The data set is copied from the at least one first storage location to the at least one second storage location, and then at least one aspect of the computer system is modified so that read requests to the data set are serviced from the at least one second storage location to achieve the migration. In one embodiment, the migration is subsequently undone by modifying the at least one aspect of the computer system so that read requests to the data set are again serviced from the at least one first storage location. In another embodiment, after the migration is performed, a determination is made as to whether to finalize the migration.

Endpoint security threat mitigation with virtual machine imaging

Methods and apparatus involve the mitigation of security threats at a computing endpoint, such as a server, including dynamic virtual machine imaging. During use, a threat assessment is undertaken to determine whether a server is compromised by a security threat. If so, a countermeasure to counteract the security threat is developed and installed on a virtual representation of the server. In this manner, the compromised server can be replaced with its virtual representation, but while always maintaining the availability of the endpoint in the computing environment. Other features contemplate configuration of the virtual representation from a cloned image of the compromised server at least as of a time just before the compromise and configuration on separate or same hardware platforms. Testing of the countermeasure to determine success is another feature as is monitoring data flows to identifying compromises, including types or severity. Computer program products and systems are also taught.

In-vehicle apparatus and semiconductor device

The in-vehicle apparatus card information stored in a storage section is set to an inactive state and is prevented from being read from the storage section when an ignition switch changes from “on” to “off” or when a user performs an operation signifying a change from an active state to the inactive state. Accordingly, the in-vehicle apparatus card information is disabled by an explicit user operation or a normal operation performed when the user gets out of a vehicle. It is possible to prevent the unauthorized use of the in-vehicle apparatus card information when the user does not get in the vehicle.

System and method for managing scalability in a distributed database

This disclosure enables a user to incrementally increase or decrease the size of the cluster and, in particular, to incrementally increase or decrease the number of map regions implemented in a metadata manager associated with the cluster while maintaining availability of the cluster. In a representative embodiment, a configurable target map size is identified, either manually (e.g., by the user) or programmatically. If the target map size is found to be within an acceptable value (given the available node configuration), a procedure to create a new map is triggered. The new map preferably is generated as follows. Initially, one or more new temporary region(s) are created either to split or join the existing regions (depending on whether the map is being increased or decreased). For each temporary region, the process also generates MDPL backup regions. Metadata from an original region (or regions) is then migrated to the temporary region(s). Once the migrations have been completed, the old region or regions (from which the metadata is migrated) are removed and what were the temporary regions are, in effect, promoted. The result is the new map.

High efficiency, ternary mix engine

Pressurized and superheated, dry steam is admitted into the working chamber of a spark ignition engine for the purpose of increasing the thermal efficiency of the engine. The steam is admitted into the working chamber near the end of compression, and before ignition of the fuel. An igniter ignites the fuel. Additional work is pneumatically recovered from the steam, thus augmenting the total work obtained by the engine.
