Irrigation and drainage based on hydrodynamic unsaturated fluid flow

Irrigation and drainage systems are disclosed, including a saturated zone and at least one pipe in communication with the saturated zone. The pipe(s) can be configured to comprise a tubarc porous microstructure for conducting water from the saturated zone to an unsaturated zone in order to drain the water from the saturated zone. The water can be delivered from the saturated zone to the unsaturated zone through the tubarc porous microstructure, thereby permitting the water to be harnessed for irrigation or drainage through the hydrodynamic movement of the water from one zone of saturation or unsaturation to another.

Irreversible electroporation to control bleeding

A method of stopping or controlling bleeding by the placement of electrodes into or near the vicinity of vessels is disclosed. Then the application of electrical pulses causing irreversible electroporation of vessel and blood cells throughout the entire area of current flow the bleeding is stopped or controlled. The electric pulses irreversibly permeate the cell membranes, thereby invoking cell death. The irreversibly permeabilized cells are left in situ and are removed by the body immune system. Through the use of irreversible electroporation bleeding can be stopped or controlled without inducing thermal damage.

Tissue ablation with irreversible electroporation

A new method for the ablation of undesirable tissue such as cells of a cancerous or non-cancerous tumor is disclosed. It involves the placement of electrodes into or near the vicinity of the undesirable tissue through the application of electrical pulses causing irreversible electroporation of the cells throughout the entire area of the undesirable tissue. The electric pulses irreversibly permeate the cell membranes, thereby invoking cell death. The irreversibly permeabilized cells are left in situ and are removed by the body immune system. The amount of tissue ablation achievable through the use of irreversible electroporation without inducing thermal damage is considerable.

Pharmacological inducement of the fed mode for enhanced drug administration to the stomach

Drugs intended for absorption in the stomach or upper intestinal tract are administered in oral drug delivery systems in conjunction with any of various substances that have been discovered to function as potent agents for inducing the fed mode. By inducing the onset of the fed mode, these agents cause the stomach to prolong its retention of the drug delivery system, which is either large enough to be retained in the stomach during the fed mode or swells or expands to such a size upon ingestion. The fed mode inducing agents include the following compounds and their salts: glycine and glycylglycine, xylitol and related sugar alcohols, sodium and other metal docusates, β-casomorphins, α-lipoic acid and similarly structured acids, 2,2-diaryl-4-(4′-aryl-4′-hydroxypipendino)butyramides, arginine, Trp-Trp, alkylpyridinium halides, dihydroxybenzoic acids, and potent sweeteners such as aspartame, aspartic acid, acesulfame, and stevioside.

System and method for art-directable retargeting for streaming video

An integrated system and method for content-aware video retargeting. An interactive framework combines key frame-based constraint editing with numerous automatic algorithms for video analysis. This combination gives content producers a high level of control of the retargeting process. One component of the framework is a non-uniform, pixel-accurate warp to the target resolution that considers automatic as well as interactively-defined features. Automatic features comprise video saliency, edge preservation at the pixel resolution, and scene cut detection to enforce bilateral temporal coherence. Additional high level constraints can be added by the producer to achieve a consistent scene composition across arbitrary output formats. Advantageously, embodiments of the invention provide a better visual result for retargeted video when compared to using conventional techniques.

Systems and methods for inventory financing

Various embodiments of the present invention provide a system that enables lenders to provide more favorable financing arrangements to borrowers that are willing to use their warehoused inventory as collateral for the financing arrangement. In particular, the system provides a mechanism through which the lender can receive more information about and exercise a higher level of control over the warehoused inventory that secures a financing arrangement, which provides the lender with the security that the collateral will be accessible in the event of the borrower's default. for example, such information may include what is in the inventory, where the inventory is located, the quantities of each asset within the inventory, the value of each asset in the inventory, and whether the lender can access and liquidate the assets in the event the borrower defaults on the financing arrangement.

Enhanced dynamic decision support processing using fused multiple disparate data sources

Processing provides a high level of automated decision support using COTS computing software and hardware. By combining information gathered from multiple structured and unstructured data sources and converting to a common protocol shared with the conditional decision logic, the operator is freed from the task of continually monitoring the situation for compliance with pre-established rules. By organizing the conditional and simulation logic of the system in a hierarchical manner, rules are applied to data-based entities, their interactions, and the overall operational situation, and then to established procedures. The hierarchical organization of the conditional logic permits a high level of control over aggregated complex rule-based processing, and provides dynamic behavior, allowing modifications of the entire system processing to be based on the simplest human interaction or a single change in the state of one data item gathered by the system.

A control system for downhill skis enables effective, continuous control of ski-to-surface resistance, to accommodate changing steepness and other conditions during a downhill ski run. Controllably positionable brake elements are mounted on the skis, centrally between the side edges thereof. Positioning motors are mounted on each ski and are operable to controllably project or retract the brake elements relative to the ski bottoms, continuously or in finite increments, allowing the skier to maintain a safe and comfortable skiing experience over almost any ski slope under a wide variety of ski conditions. The braking elements, preferably blade-like and oriented at right angles to the ski axis, are positioned close to the skier's feet, allowing the skis to be easily controlled in turns and other maneuvers. A spring-loaded, hinged mounting arrangement allows the mechanisms to momentarily pivot to retracted positions whenever the braking elements engage a rock or other immovable object.
