Mixing arrangement for atomizing nozzle in multi-phase flow

The invention relates to an improved mixing arrangement for, primarily, moving bitumen in steam from sources of such bitumen and steam to a reactor or coker for further processing of the bitumen into petroleum products. The invention provides a main conduit connected to an atomizing nozzle mounted in a wall of the reactor and first and second conduits for flowing bitumen and steam respectively into the main conduit. The first conduit is angled relative to the main conduit at an acute angle of about 45° and the second conduit is angled relative to the main conduit at an acute angle of about 30°. The second conduit is positioned downstream of the first conduit by a short distance of about 23 mm and may be angled radially relative to the first conduit by any angle, although a 90° angle is preferred. A flow accelerating nozzle is located in the second conduit adjacent the entrance therefrom into the main conduit. The arrangement of the invention improves the flow characteristics of 2-phase material flowing to the atomizing nozzle, reducing pulsations in the main conduit and improving the resulting atomization of the bitumen in the reactor.

Method for producing melt-infiltrated ceramic composites using formed supports

A method for producing shaped articles of ceramic composites provides a high degree of dimensional tolerance to these articles. A fiber preform is disposed on a surface of a stable formed support, a surface of which is formed with a plurality of indentations, such as grooves, slots, or channels. Precursors of ceramic matrix materials are provided to the fiber preform to infiltrate from both sides of the fiber preform. The infiltration is conducted under vacuum at a temperature not much greater than a melting point of the precursors. The melt-infiltrated composite article substantially retains its dimension and shape throughout the fabrication process.

Mounting system for clay target thrower and rifle/pistol rest

An L-shaped tube has a horizontal member that fits into a trailer hitch, and a vertical member. A platform is secured to a post that fits into the vertical member. The platform has bolt holes arranged to engage a variety of commercial clay target throwers and a gun / pistol rest. A threaded dowel is inserted through the a 180 degree horizontal slot in the vertical member, and screwed into a threaded hole in the post, thereby limiting the range the platform post can swivel within the vertical member. The dowel can be tightened to lock the post between zero and one-hundred-eighty degrees. A tension cable secures the vertical member to the vehicle to attenuate vibrations. A gun / pistol rest configured to mount from the platform has a forward cradle for a gun stock or barrel, and rear mount that variously functions as a rifle-butt cradle or a pistol-butt support.

Controls and standards for assays and method for manufacture thereof

Controls and standards for assays and method for manufacturing the controls and standards is described. The controls or standards comprise a porous carrier material which has quantitatively reversibly absorbed and dried thereon an analyte for the control or standard wherein the analyte is not degraded over time while it is absorbed to the porous carrier material. Preferably, the controls and standards are provided as a control strip (10) in which the porous carrier material (20) is adhered to the distal end (16) of a support member (12). To quantitatively elute the analyte from the carrier to a solvent for an assay, the carrier is contacted to the same solvent used for the samples in the assay. After the analyte has been eluted, the carrier is discarded and the assay is performed. The controls and standards are useful for assays which detect bacteria, fungi, viruses, and proteins.

Method and apparatus for use of a time-dependent watermark for the purpose of copy protection

A copy protection system for protecting content wherein a ticket and a watermark are created, utilizing a first time reference (TD) and a one-way function, to indicate the copy protection status of the content. A source device produces the ticket and watermark using a first time reference and a hashing function. The source device provides a data stream containing the content, the ticket, the watermark, and the first time reference (TD) to the receiver device. The receiver device determines if the first time reference (TD) is contained within a time window determined by a second time reference. When, the first time reference (TD) is contained within the time window, the receiver compares the ticket to the watermark using the first time reference (TD) and the one-way function, and based on the comparison, produces a signal indicating the copy protection status of the content.
