Disclosed is a method for achieving a signaling process of a high speed fax supported by gateway control protocols, wherein MGCP protocol mutual information and control fax operation are adopted at soft switch and the gateway, and both T.38 and VBD fax mode can be compatible at one time, in which T.38 mode is preferably selected and then VBD fax mode; two gateways of the soft switch control fax transmission terminal and receiving terminal confer on fax modes and fax media channel information; voice communication state is switched back or call is released directly without switching back to voice communication state according to working state of switching set by soft switch, after the fax is finished. The gateway in accordance with the present invention adopts MGCP protocols, such as IAD. Said method can dynamically assign IP addresses, port numbers and coding modes of fax medias and can achieve mutual fax of different plants and different operators when being carried out over the whole net; concision, clarity, high efficiency and reliability of signaling process adds little mutual information to a voice calling and can support crossing-soft switch fax services, with excellent feasibility of implementation.
