Electromechanical lock employing shape memory metal wire

InactiveUS20050252260A1Easy to anchorAmount of stretching in was limitedNon-mechanical controlsMechanical controlsPower flowMiniaturization
An electronic lock incorporating one or more shape memory metal wire segment as its electromechanical transducer. An electronic control circuit injects electrical current into the shape memory metal wire, causing it to heat up and contract. A gate is positioned by the action of the shape memory metal wire(s) to either allow or block the movement of a locking bolt that affect locking or unlocking. Millions of operational cycles are achieved by limiting the stretching of the shape memory metal wire at low temperature to small percentages of its total length. The design lends itself to miniaturization, with commensurate reduction in power consumption, that is useful to the evolution of future electronic locks.

Shape Memory Polymer Mascara Brush

ActiveUS20100071715A1Uniform bristle quantityUniform orientationBristlePackaging toiletriesFiberBristle
A mascara brush head includes bristles made from shape memory polymer (SMP) filaments or fibers. The shape memory polymer filaments are selected to exhibit a first shape during assembly of the brush, and a second shape after exposure to an external stimulus in the form of heat or other energy. The brush head is initially assembled, i.e., lengths of SMP filaments are placed between wire segments and the wire segments are then twisted about each other to form a twisted wire core. The core grips the filament lengths medially of their outer ends, usually substantially at their midpoints, so as to clamp them. The first shape can be straight to facilitate assembly of the fibers in the wire core. The second shape, after assembly in the core and after being subjected to the external stimulus, can be any bristle shape suitable for enhancing the function of the brush, e.g., kinked, wavy or coiled. The brush head may be comprised solely of SMP filaments, or may be a blend of SMP filaments and any other suitable filament (e.g., nylon, natural plant or animal fibers, etc.).

System and method for estimating capacitance of wires based on congestion information

A system for calculating interconnect wire lateral capacitances in an automated integrated circuit design system subdivides the chip area of a circuit design to be placed and routed into a coarse grid of buckets. An estimate of congestion in each bucket is computed from an estimated amount of routing space available in the bucket and estimated consumption of routing resources by a global router. This congestion score is then used to determine the spacing of the wires in the bucket which is in turn used to estimate the capacitance of the wire segment in the bucket.

Centripetal reflex method of space launch

A method of launching space vehicles by towing them aloft, then twirling them around a large transport aircraft (40) at the center of a formation (AA) of other tow aircraft (28, 34) and other devices of the invention. A lengthy, semi-rigid tow pipeline (14) serves as a conduit for the transfer of fuels and oxidizers, as the tow cable, and as an energy storage device that reflexes efficiently when it is flexed. The flexing of tow pipeline (14) is caused by a parachute (22) acting in conjunction with all the aircraft making the tighest turn they are capable of doing. Tow aircraft in certain arrays (28) are joined to tow pipeline (14) by sliding trollies (26) that also host canard rotor wings for the aerodynamic support of the main tube (12). The tow trollies (26) aid the sliding tow aircraft arrays (28) in gaining mechanical advantage to accelerate the space vehicle. The space vehicle may also burn its own motors for a longer-than-usual time as it gains in angular velocity because its fuels are replenished by a pipeline that automatically increases the pressure and volume of fuel flow as the angular acceleration increases. The tow pipeline (14) features a micro-hole laminar lift foil (50) on the top surface of the wing and on the bottom. By balancing the vacuum level in the plurality of chamber underneath the plurality of lift foil 50, the pilot or autopilot has an effective way to control the flight characteristics of the tow pipeline (14). In some embodiments the micro-hole laminar lift foil (50) on the top and bottom will made of transparent hollow wire segments or other material so arranged as to pass ambient light through to photo-voltaic cells below that convert sunlight to electrical energy.

The use of redundant routes to increase the yield and reliability of a VLSI layout

Disclosed is a method and system for inserting redundant paths into an integrated circuit. Particularly, the invention provides a method for identifying a single via in a first path connecting two elements, determining if an alternate route is available for connecting the two elements (other than a redundant via), and for inserting a second path into the available alternate route. The combination of the first and second paths provides greater redundancy than inserting a redundant via alone. More importantly, such redundant paths provide for redundancy when congestion prevents a redundant via from being inserted adjacent to the single via. An embodiment of the method further comprises removing the single via and any redundant wire segments, if all of the additional vias used to form the second path can be made redundant.
