System and method for imposing thermal gradients on thin walled test objects and components

A test facility provides high temperature, high pressure and high mass flow fluid to a test object to form a relatively large thermal gradient on the object. Energy in the fluid is recuperated to drive system components, such as a heat exchanger and a turbocharger compressor. A test chamber housing the test object can be arranged to conform to a contour of the test object. A control system permits independent variation of pressure, temperature, cooling fluid and fluid velocity, as well as mechanical loading on the test object. Noncontact, optical inspection measurement techniques can be employed to measure test chamber and / or test object parameters. The test object can be configured to direct cooling airflow to permit various temperature or pressure gradients to be implemented. The test facility is relatively inexpensive to operate and provides a significant cost advantage over testing conducted in a full gas turbine engine.

Electronic ballast with closed loop control using composite current and voltage feedback and method thereof

An electronic control system especially for non-linear loads, such as high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, includes an active power factor correction circuit (APFC). The system provides a power factor correction of above 0.95; total harmonic distortion (THD) below 5%; lamp crest factor (LCF) close to unity; efficient power consumption and reliable open circuit voltage (OCV) under all power line conditions. A ballast would include integrated circuits (ICs) and a four-arm transistor bridge which is directly driven by integrated circuits. The bridge generates reversal of polarity to the load. An approximate average current feedback is derived from a load current. A resistor divider in parallel with the load provides voltage feedback. The average current feedback and voltage feedback are added together to provide an approximation of power consumed by the load, without the complex circuitry required for a true power feedback of current multiplied by voltage. That composite feedback signal is transmitted to the integrated circuit (IC) which compares it with an internal reference voltage and which adjusts the IC output to minimize the error.

Method of High-efficiency Connected Mode Cell Re-selection

A novel and efficient connected mode cell reselection procedure is proposed to improve the mobility performance for user equipments (UEs) configured with extended connected mode Discontinuous Reception (DRX) cycle in LTE systems. A UE-centric mobility mechanism with which a UE performs cell reselection in RRC connected mode is proposed. The UE is allowed to select a target cell without handover signaling in the source cell and when needed to initiate signaling with the target cell, for which signal quality is much better. In this way, handover failures due to failed signaling in the source cell can be avoided. More specifically, the proposed mobility mechanism reduces signaling overhead and is inherently robust towards different DRX cycle settings, i.e., longer DRX cycles do not cause more failures, or more overhead, or more battery consumption.

Battery charging method and system with three-stage temperature-compensated charge profile

A battery charging method and system with a temperature-compensated charge profile requires that, during a ‘bulk stage’, a regulated constant charge current is provided to the battery until the voltage across it increases to a predetermined ‘absorption stage voltage limit’, at which time charging transitions to an ‘absorption stage’. During the absorption stage, a charge current is provided which maintains the voltage across the battery at the absorption stage voltage limit, until: 1) the charge current falls to a predetermined current threshold, 2) the charge delivered to the battery during the absorption stage reaches a predetermined charge threshold, or 3) the difference in charge between two successive intervals of equal duration becomes zero, at which time charging transitions to a ‘float stage’. During the ‘float stage’, a regulated constant charge current is provided, such that the voltage across the battery varies with the temperature of the battery.
